PALM Hop Select is a complex yet balanced top-fermentation connoisseurs’ beer with a reasonable alcohol content. Its specific hop aroma comes from the aromatic Hallertau Mittelfrüh hop variety. The carefully selected PALM yeast gives this beer its banana-like fruitiness, and the special PALM malts provide its subtle touch of caramel. Bottle conditioning ensures fine sparkling and an excellent shelf-life. PALM Hop Select undergoes hopping in three stages. An initial hopping at the start of the boiling process ensures the bitter flavour. The specific hop aroma comes from the Hallertau Mittelfrüh. This aromatic hop variety is added as a second hopping at the end of boiling and as a third hopping during dry hopping (end of fermentation), when Hallertau Mittelfrüh from our own hop field is used.

Bottle tasted at home. Pours amber with a white head. Aroma of lemon, with flavors of bread and malt. Thin bodied, well balanced, bitter finish.

Initially marketed as Palm Hopper in limited edition. Palm’s answer to the recent hop revival in Belgian beer culture, this has a yellowish white, loose, moussy head and deep ’old gold’ colour, clear. Aroma of biscuit, caramel, grass, apple, some citrus, iron. Fruity, rounded palate, slick, a bit sugary, caramel and toasted malts, subdued grassy hops in the finish but (much) less bittering than expected, ending rather metallic and malt sweetish. Should have been a lot hoppier in my opinion, but I guess they did not want to risk putting off the average consumer considering their declining sales. In all, not a bad, unambitious session beer, but that’s about it.

Bottle @ home. Clear amber colour with a medium sized, kinda chunky off-white head. Smells malts, sweet, pilsener. Tastes sweetish, watery, malts, hint of iron, some herbs and spices. There a nice but feint hop taste. Thin body, medium to heavy carbo. Not bad but certainly a bit boring imo.

Bottle @ Schraevenacker, Belgium. Pours golden with a white head, loads of lively bubbles. Aroma of malt, some grassy hops, a hint of spruce. Flavor is malt, little sweet, grass, a note of spruce. Medium body, lively carbonation. 030814

Keg at Birmingham Beer Bash; clear golden pour with very little head, malt and yeast aroma, taste is malty along with some spice and yeast character, minimal amount of hop.

On tap at Fuggles Beer Cafe Tunbridge Wells. Clear deep gold colour lasting white head. Ok light Belgian ale. Some hoppiness onf the spicy variety on the finish. Yep a regular Belgian blond with a hint of newspaper emptiness in ths flavour and that spucy hop on the finish. Fine.

33cl Bottle: BBD 2nd May 2015. Poured robustly into my huge ’Judas’ glass at home on 30th May 2014. Large white head (I did say it was poured robustly) on top of a clear, bright amber body. The nose was both yeasty and of spicy/floral hops with a mini sweetness in the background. Expected a hop blast in the taste, it didn’t come: definately a hop presence, but not powerful or overwhelming, the malts almost holding their own. Medium body feel and depth; a pleasant, if slightly ’under achieving’ brew.

(Keg at Kaisla, 20140528) The beer poured golden and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had grass and metallicness. Palate was light bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, grass, metallicness, malts and bitterness. Afteraste was bitter. A watery brew with metallic hop characteristics. Displeasing.
