33 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 16.01.2011
Aroma has sourish cherries and some oaky notes. Flavour has somewhat intensive sour cherries and oaky notes. Rather typical oud bruin and I am not a friend of that style. Decent anyway.

Dumpy 33cl brown bottle, best before 25 Nov 2011, poured into a ’Hoegaarden Grand Cru’ badged stemmed tulip glass on 17 May 2011. No sediment left the bottle, so my glass was full of a dirty, dull orangey brown liquid and a large tan coloured head of big bubbles. The body was clear but not bright. Treacle and malt molasses filled the nose, some rich plum and date aromas too. The taste wasn’t as sweet as the smells suggested, this isn’t a sweet malty tasting beer at all. The alcohol gives it a peppery bite, hops adding to a slingering bitterness as the mouth drys. Very drinkable and far to easy for such a strong brew, I had to stop myself taking large gulps, reminding myself to sip it slowly and savour the flavour: rather than wanging it down my throat. One of the best Grand Cru’s I’ve had and certainly one of the better, well balanced Belgian Strong Dark Ales out there in the market.

330ml bottle. Clear brown with huge macropore off-white head collapsing into a small creamy coat. Intense dark and dried fruit aroma, some spicy and yeasty notes. Complex taste, astonishingly lighter fruit notes, palatable sweetness, corresponding fruit acid, acerbic yeast stays in the background. Finish has almost exclusively orange and orange zest. Felicitous.

Bottle at home in London with Lyoli. Pours clear auburn with a medium, tight foam head. Big yeast, toast, and Belgian sugar aroma. Medium sweet flavor with some dark, dried fruits and considerable bitterness of wood and earth. Full bodied with average to lively carbonation. Sweet, faintly warming finish, rather dry, some light toasted grass, yeast, toasted sugar, some ripe fruits. The lasting bitterness is somewhat odd. Overall decent.

33cl bottle from Bierzwerg. BBE 31/08/2012. Poured mahogany color with a beige, lasting head. Nice yeasty, fruity, slightly sour aroma, with some caramel coming in later on. Flavor is alcohol, sweet fruits, yeast, long sweet finish with caramel and alcohol warmth. Maybe much alcohol in flavor, but not too sweet. Nicely balanced.

Pours with a huge beige head and a muddy brown colour, plenty of carbonation. Aroma is a nice mix of malts, hops, and alcohol in a good blend. Taste is heavy on the malts with a heavy alcohol finish. Surprisingly nice mouthfeel for such a heavy brew.

Medium brown color with orange and a high, fine, pillowy head. Aroma of pears, caramel, plums. Rich sweet flavor with a tangy edge. Fruity, slightly aged and oxidized, with spicy cake and a strongly hoppy, bitter, even astringent finish. Very minerally as well. Rather light body. Tasty and challenging, though not spectacular.
