This IPA refuses to be pale. In fact, it is a deep ruby red. This huge American style beer, originating from Oregon, uses West Coast hops in appropriately massive proportions, braced by a strong crystal malt backbone. Deep ruby red, earthy orange and caramel nose, sweet toffee start, peppery dark roast parsnips and a long bitter finish. This beer is a Hardknott classic and best exemplifies our American craft beer influences and our intention to shock stuffy traditionalists.

330ml bottle at home. Pours chestnut brown with a frothy receding head. A nice fresh hoppy aroma, very refreshing taste, hopped to hell but in a very skilful way. Quite fancy another one now.

33cl bottle from the Sainsbury’s Beer Hunt 2013 range. Reddish copper with a billowing but fast fading cream head; the aroma is predominantly Belgian yeast with some sour fruit; pleasant hoppy bitterness but rather sweet; and a lasting, warming, finish.

Bottle from A Tutta Birra, Milan, bb 13-06-14
Dark brown color with reddish hue; huge head. Deep aroma, hops in the front, some fruits, then biscuits and caramel, finally English yeast. The mouthfeel is semi-dry, there is too much carbonation; with strong caramel flavor, dark caramel, touch of roasted malt, and light liquorice; it has a good blend of resiny hops and yeast; the final is a bit spicy.
Lot of character; but also rough.

Bottle form Corks of Cotham, Bristol. Lovely deep chestnut red colour with moderate carbonation. Bready malts, a touch of caramel, citrus hops, jammy fruits, a pinch of chocolate powder and a lingering dry finish with a touch of pine. Enjoyable.

33cl bottle from Microbar, Manchester. Pours deep ruby with a tan head. Deliciously hoppy nose! Hoppy aroma with pine, citrus, caramel, malt and notes of berries, herbs, spices, wood and some roasty hints. Medium body and average carbonation. Well balanced and delicious. Finishes quite dry and bitter with notes of grapefruit. Bitter aftertaste. Nice and refreshing IPA - more please!

330ml bottle. Ruby brown-orange colour, off-white head and aroma of sweet caramel, brown sugar and woody hop. Taste is sweet caramel malt with a woody resinous grassy pine hop bitterness that lingers. Oily mouth feel, medium bodied with soft carbonation. Quite OK.

Bottled@Euston Tap, London (Autumn 2011). Hazy rubyish amber colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma is sweet malts with mild toasted notes as well as some nice fruity, floral and grassy hops to it. Flavour is rather much the same in a very pleasant balance. Quite bodied as well. A bit crisp carbonation, but otherwise good. Deeper in colour than many Black IPA’s/Cascadian Darks that I have had.
