St. Bernardus Tripel is a traditional abbey beer that follows the classic tripel style. In the Watou region a tripel is often referred to as a ‘Bernadetje’. A fine tribute that pays homage to Bernadette, the youngest daughter of Evariste Deconinck, the man to whom the monks of Abbaye Sainte Marie du Mont des Cats sold their Belgian property in 1934. St. Bernardus Tripel is a blonde beer with an inviting golden hue and an impressive, velvety-soft head of froth. EBC 13.

On tap at Hops, Crewe – therefore a 7.5% rather than 8%. Pours a cloudy golden peach with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. There’s a slightly strange aroma of bacon, biscuits, Belgian hops and yeast. In the mouth it has a slightly sweet coating with underlying sharpness. Flavours are Belgian yeast, coriander, spice and hints of banana and vanilla later on. Finish is somewhat dry. This is a decent solid tripel.

Bottle. Bready malt aroma with notes of banana, spicy Belgian yeast, clove, coriander, citrus and grassy hops. Pours clear golden colored with a large white head that has excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with bready malt, citrus, clove and coriander flavors. Finishes smooth but a touch dry with spicy Belgian yeast, banana and grassy hop flavors. Excellent Tripel.

On tap at Het Lagerhuys. Pours hazy dull gold with an off-white head. Estery nose, lots of coriander, white pepper, spices, herbal grass on the nose. Flavour has a dry Belgian yeast expression, cloves, white pepper, spices, herbal grass. Very drinkable with a potent and well-handled yeast expression.
