Hik! Dark brown to black. Blabla. Aroma and flavor are malts, roast a bit, dark malts, bitter. Hmm can't say I like this very much.

Flavoured stout from one of the new generation, American-oriented German craft brewers, a strong oatmeal stout with lactose, almonds, vanilla and chocolate - good for a nightcap I suppose. Initially huge, towering high, ruddy-beige, large-bubbled head, at first lacing in thick patches but collapsing quickly and in the end reduced to almost nothing; jet black robe with only very thin 'dirty-brown' edges. Aroma - after the initial 'sting' of carbon dioxide has faded away - of dusty old 'fondant' chocolate bars, cold black coffee, dark green tree leaves, roasted almonds rather than 'fresh' ones, brown bread crust, beef stock, gin, cigar ashes, nutmeg, marmite, burnt raisins, touch of earthy black radish, some vague background vanilla but very (too!) subtle. Rounded, cleanish onset, sweetish but restrainedly so, sourish undercurrent, umami hint (beef stock cubes); fruity aspects limited to burnt currants and raisins, carbonation relatively soft but still tingling on the tongue's surface. Full, oily body, bitter black-chocolatey middle, rounded, with roasted-nutty and toasted-bready edges but also something iron-like that doesn't feel entirely 'natural'; creamy sweetness from lactose remains very faint, but the oatmeal does at a certain amount of 'velvetiness'. Evident nuttiness in the finish, but I honestly would not be able to identify it as 'almonds' if I hadn't known - tastes more like charred walnuts in fact, mingled with pronounced black coffee- and chicory-like bitterness. Again the vanilla remains very subtle, if detectable at all (I guess it has already faded away by now - and probably hasn't been too generously applied to begin with); blood-like aspect in the finish along with spicy nutmeg- and black pepper-like impressions from the hops, which provide a long-lasting bitterness that blends nicely with the bitter chocolate aspect (which is quite dominant throughout the beer), the coffeeish roasted bitterness and, eventually, the warming, soothing, gin-like alcohol effect. Decent enough stout as such, but reading its composition, I was expecting a lush, sweet, 'fat' and desserty pastry stout - not that this should necessarily be the case if lactose and vanilla are involved of course, but still... This is essentially still just a robust, very strong ('imperial') oatmeal stout, with the black chocolate adding flavour much more than almond or vanilla - both those elements remain very understated. Lots of old-fashioned roastedness, a metallic blood-like effect and burnt nuttiness, so for those who like their stouts 'old school', this will certainly qualify. I do miss the promised vanilla, though...

Bottled 330ml (Beergium)
Dark brown colour, medium-sized brownish head. Milky, toasted, licorice aroma. Medium-bodied, quite smooth palate. Flavour has also toasted, slightly burned malts, licorice ... can't get much vanilla or almond out of it. Quite simple strong impy.

On tap at Biererei Bar, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted almonds, light roast, and some lactose. Flavour is fairly marzipan-like, with medium roast, lactose, and alcohol. A little harsh but quite silky on the palate. Good stuff.

RB backlog, CBF Vienna 11/18. Super intense almond aroma, rosewater, marzipan, a bit roasty, not artificial. Not even too sweet, mineralic. Medium body, with soft carbonation. Works surprisingly well.
