Draft at Rustic Leaf. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of beige head that dissipates. Coffee forward nose with a kiss of vanilla bean and big cacao nib notes. Dark chocolate, vanilla and a faint marshmallow note on the palate. Very smooth with some nice hop and roast bitterness that comes in to balance everything out. Well made. --- Beer merged from original tick of Port 59 on 16 Aug 2019 at 22:07 - Score: 7. Original review text: Coffee forward nose w/ a kiss of vanilla bean & big cacao nib notes. 16 ounce crowler into tulip glass, filled on 5/26/2019. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/black/roast/bready malts, vanilla, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with big strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, herbal, woody, grassy, peppery hops; and roast/charred bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, dark bread/crust, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, vanilla, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready/grainy, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6.3%. Overall this is an awesome vanilla porter. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, vanilla, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/charred/drying finish; nicely soft feel. Awesome balance of rich malts and vanilla flavors; with balancing earthy hops, and mild fruity yeast. Mild residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.
