Made with Highly roasted malted barley, and plenty of it, to give the beer an uncommon richness and smoky, roasty depth. Just the way the 18th century Russian royalty liked it.

Fairly decent imperial stout, nothing great but hits all the right notes, albeit some not quite as heavily as you’d like. Pour isn’t all that great, the beer coming out dark brown but lighter than you’d expect, and the head bubbles up momentarily but leaves a thin beige doughnut in its wake and no lace. Taste is big and aggressive, but also in need of some finesse; dark chocolate dominates the front, while a cherry-fig tartness slides in just underneath. Gains a bit of anise in the middle, then sweetens with milk chocolate and raisin (and possibly some banana) on the back end before a lengthy, boozy bitter fade closes things out. Again, not a bad beer, just not as roasty or deep as a great imperial stout should be, and the texture’s thin for the style.

$5.99 bomber from Market Street Wine Shop, Uptown. Pours thick and black with a large brown head. Aroma of smoked peat, coffee, chocolate, molasses, licorice. Flavor is thick chocolate, coffee, light smoked peat, dark fruit undertones, a hint of spice. Quite good, especially for the price.

DUDE. What a gem! I can't think of a better stout, except maybe Garage Project's Aro Noir. Tastes so good I almost didn't wanna swallow...

Big bodied, strong, a very good stout. Poured heavy inside of a tulip glass, black body, an appealing malty brown head that hangs around. Smells of roasted pecans. First taste is a kick. Dark chocolate, berry, followed by toffee. Malty, scorched toast. Stays with a full, broad palate. A hint of alcohol throughout. 22 oz. bomber means one and done. Save the second bottle for another time. Yowzah Lagunitas. Good job.

Bottle. A- Milk chocolate, creamy, roasty, burnt caramel. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Bitter, cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, aggressive finish. O- Definitely a traditional imperial stout. Lots of bitter chocolate and aggressiveness on the finish. Not my favorite but it’s done well.

Bottle shared at the big Dave tasting at craft beer Co Islington. Dark mahogany brown coloured pour with a loose dark tan head. Aroma is vanilla, caramel, little salty oxo, tangy caramel. Flavour is composed of sweet, dark brown sugar, little jammy, cocoa, vanilla. Palate is medium full, sweet, vanilla, moderate carbonation. Decent. Little mint.

Bottle at Craft Islington, thanks to Fergus. It pours black with a small tan head. The aroma is soft, sweet, chocolate, candy, fruit cake, treacle and Dandelion & Burdock. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, chewy malts, spice, alcohol warmth, charred wood and caramel with a boozy finish. Medium - full body and moderate carbonation. A bit chewy perhaps, but a decent enough imperial stout.
