Scotty Karate scotch ale aged in Bourbon Barrels
We brew Scotty Karate with cherry wood smoked malt instead of the traditional peat smoked malt offering up notes of coffee, caramel and sweet caramelized brown sugar. This barrel aged version is stored in the finest bourbon barrels until it’s ready to roundhouse kick it’s way out. The smokey, caramelly flavors of Scotty spar perfectly with the sharp, oaky flavors of the barrel.

Bottle poured to pint glass. A nice version of the DH Scotch ale. Nothing complex other than some oak and vanilla, but the non-BB Scotty is a simple beer. I like that the high ABV doesn’t kick. A nice BB-aged beer.

Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy brown color ale with a dark foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of bourbon and vanilla with caramelized sugar notes is quite awesome. Taste is a nice mix between some heavily caramelized malt notes with some bourbon and vanilla notes with a woody finish. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Awesome nightcap style beer.

On tap at Hopcat A2. Pours a near clear deep ruby amber with a light brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of earthy bread with some toffee and a touch of bourbon supporting. Flavor combines toffee and bourbon with some sweet grains.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/1/2016. Pours lightly hazy dark ruby red/brownish color with a small dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lacing cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big caramel, molasses, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, cherry, toasted biscuit, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and coconut; with light chocolate, leather, peat smoke, and oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge caramel, molasses, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, cherry, toasted biscuit, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and coconut; with light chocolate, leather, peat smoke, and oak/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, molasses, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, cherry, toasted biscuit, leather, vanilla, bourbon, oak, coconut, leather, peat smoke, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/oak spiciness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light bourbon/oak dryness as well. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is incredibly well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible scotch ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
