The brew that opened our doors in 1997, Abbey Ale brought Trappist-style brewing to America.
This full-bodied dubbel pours a deep burgundy with a fluffy head and enchanting aromas. Rich, fruity flavors and hints of honey, caramel and toffee linger before giving way to a long, dry finish. Brewed with Belgian specialty malts and a variety of spices, it pairs well with roasted meats, pâtés and terrines, and soft cheeses.

The beer looks great. It’s got a big head and a thick dark brown look that definitely appealed to me. Once I smelled this beer, I knew something was wrong. There are certainly some interesting elements to it and I fully believe that there is a good beer lurking within, but to my nose, it smelled like strong stout with a shot of vodka dropped in, like the horror that is a boilermaker. The taste is really great for the first half second or so, but there isn’t even enough time to swallow before the alcohol kicks in. The mouthfeel is fine. There’s good carbonation, and the beer seems well-constructed. Will re-review in the future.

Draft at the Haze. Thick, deep brown-amber color underneath a massive rusty beige head. Very true to style, displays lots of Belgian nuances. Yeasty plum and dark fruit tastes, pungent raisin. Sweet and certainly malt centered, not much hop character to speak of. Rich and full bodied, complex dark malt and Belgian yeast flavor. Well done, though it seemed a lot cooler when it was 4.99 a bottle a few years back..

Location: Have had this one a few times, but this rating is from a 12 oz bottle shared by a friend a few weeks ago
Aroma: Sweet fruits, with some bread/yeast/malts
Appearance: Pours a reddish-brown color
Flavor: Taste is sweet and yeasty, with some fruits and wood
Palate: Medium body, mild ABV burn on finish
Overall Impression: This is another solid Belgian style brew from Ommegang. These guys are doing a nice job of making Belgian style beer in the US.

pours ruby-red, off-white head aroma, yeasty with dominant banana aroma, some brown sugar and malt as well as some floral scent. flavor, Belgian yeast, banana and other fruits; pear, fig. Med-high carbonation, warming abv and a silky palate. Body has a nice complex hops/yeasty spices, some caramel and toffee followed by hints of chocolate.

This is definitely the best Abbey I’ve ever had. Aroma is fruity with a hint of hops, appearance is a very dark red/burgundy with a thin head. Malty taste with hints of apricot and chocolate. Rather decadent and enjoyable.

Pours a coppery red with a great tan head. Decent tatsting with out being over powering. malty with nice finish. Enjoyable Dubbel for a cold december night.

Dark cloudy brown, large fluffy head. aroma is caramelly, spicy, malty, faint toffee, faint hops. flavor is sweet malty, caramel toffee, belgian spices, cardemom, faint dark fruity, very faintly oxidized.

75 cl bottle. Medium to dark brown with lots of red in it and a nice head that slowly turned into lace and remained throughout. Strong aroma of dark malts, chocolate, raisins, cherries, cookies, yeast. Very rich and complex. Flavor of dark malt, very rich and malty, with cherries, raisins, chocolate. Sweet but very well balanced and very complex. An excellent beer, as good as the best dubbels in Belgium.

bottle, pours amber with tond of red, tall off white head. Strong malt and spiced nose. Some clove, and cinnamon. Very sweet malt body, some candy sugar, and a peppery spiced ending that lingers. An average dubbel.
