The brew that opened our doors in 1997, Abbey Ale brought Trappist-style brewing to America.
This full-bodied dubbel pours a deep burgundy with a fluffy head and enchanting aromas. Rich, fruity flavors and hints of honey, caramel and toffee linger before giving way to a long, dry finish. Brewed with Belgian specialty malts and a variety of spices, it pairs well with roasted meats, pâtés and terrines, and soft cheeses.

750mL bottle, pours dark reddish brown with a big beige head that takes a while to settle. Nose is candied sugar, caramel malt and light dried fruits. Flavour of caramel, candied sugar and lots of yeast. Highly carbonated. Very nice - it's like a toned version of Three Philosophers.

Beautiful dark ruby colour, firm creamy beige head. Decent carbonation. This beer certainly is a looker. Sweet aroma, caramel with notes of fruit and prunes, with a rather overpowering metallic iron smell. The flavour is of caramel, malts, yeast notes, but rather thinner than expected. The finish is very short. Not nearly as balanced as it’s Belgian counterparts. I expected more of this beer. (from 75cL bottle, thanks to RM for sharing)

Sampled from a bottle. Poured a hazy brown with an amber hue with a light brown head that lasted and laced nicely. Aroma had a bit of citrus and fruit with some sweet bread, coriander and a hint of caramel. Flavor was similar with a combination of light fruit, coriander, slight spice and a smooth caramel finish.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark amber color. The beer has a sweet, malty aroma, with a touch of spice. The beverage was relatively easy to drink, with a nice malt and caramel characters. Honey, tinge of toffee.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark, opaque orangish-red with a large tan head. The aroma is figs, apricots, butterscotch, molasses, and a biscuit dough yeast smell. The flavor is sweet with a sharp citrus tartness. The palate is surprisingly light and smooth, and slightly astringent. The finish is a little clingy and bitter, and the abv shows through with a light warming feel. Overall, an amazing brew. Smooth and drinkable, yet very flavorful and complex.

Pours deep yet dull amber with semi loose dark tan head. The aroma is pretty rich with ripe plum, figs and dates along with modest amounts of yeasty spices in the background. The taste has the same dark fruity sweetness as noted in the nose and then slowly gets more and more prickly and bright with spiciness, spiced red apple, raisins, nutmeg and then picking up softer yeasty notes into the finish.

Nice dark brown/reddish color. Nose and taste is a little too sweet and doesn’t mask alcohol content as well as other breweries. Rated 3/1/03
