The brew that opened our doors in 1997, Abbey Ale brought Trappist-style brewing to America.

This full-bodied dubbel pours a deep burgundy with a fluffy head and enchanting aromas. Rich, fruity flavors and hints of honey, caramel and toffee linger before giving way to a long, dry finish. Brewed with Belgian specialty malts and a variety of spices, it pairs well with roasted meats, pâtés and terrines, and soft cheeses.

May 2010: On tap in the Burger Bar (las Vegas), poured into a chalice. I like and know Belgian dubbels fairly well, and thought this one fitted in nicely with what I am used too, if a little sweeter than some. Deep amber in colour, not as dark as most dubbels, but decent enough. The head was thin, a tan colour, leaving next to no lacing as I drank. The nose was malty, malt molasses gave it a sweet smell, the alcohol also seemed to get into the aroma. The taste was all sweetened malts, caramel with hints of dried fruits (mixed peel, raisins, sultanas, etc). The alcohol was, like in the smell, very conspicuous again. Glad I only had the one, but glad I had the one, to compare it with others.

Refrigerated 750 mL bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours clear crimson with three finger fluffy beige head. Very little lacing, light body, smooth texture, highly carbonated, and very little aroma. Taste is fruit (mostly plum, some apple, and a hint of fig) and honey. Easier to drink than many dubbels.

355ml bottle. Clear dark brown-red with yellowish off-white very fine pored head. Dark berry fruit aroma with alcoholic vestiges. Gingerbread, dark fruit, anise. Wow! What a conglomeration of fine and according tastes. Passing a number of Belgian origin Dubbels.

Bottle Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Clear amberish brown pour. Nose was dark fruit, spices, sugar and booze. The flavour was sweet and had caramel malts, yeast and more dark fruit notes, but a bit thin. Bit of a chore to chug through really. Ok at a push, but rather overrated. Surely there are more worthy beers to ship over the pond.

750ml from Pick’s poured into a Trappist glass. Pours a dark brown with about 1 finger of thick tan head. Aroma of baking spices(cinnamon and nutmeg), caramel and roasty coffee. Light sweet on the start and medium bitter on the finish. Taste of caramel and chocolate. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, it’s a pretty good beer. Not my favorite style but something to enjoy nonetheless. I suggest splitting with a friend.
