The brew that opened our doors in 1997, Abbey Ale brought Trappist-style brewing to America.

This full-bodied dubbel pours a deep burgundy with a fluffy head and enchanting aromas. Rich, fruity flavors and hints of honey, caramel and toffee linger before giving way to a long, dry finish. Brewed with Belgian specialty malts and a variety of spices, it pairs well with roasted meats, pâtés and terrines, and soft cheeses.

2k7 bottle. Pours a perfect dark brown with a huge but dissipational head. Aroma is caramel raisin and yeast, taste is similar w/malts and a nicely accentuated bit of hops. Well regarded.

Bottle. Picked this up in Asheville, NC. Smell was fruity. Taste was that of a good traditional Belgian ale, but not great. Unibroue Trois Pistoles was much better. It’s worth a try though.

Over the top carbonation, good amonts of bready sweet caramel malts. No hops to be found. There is an odd metallic flavor that dominates the finish with a bitterness that seems to be out of place.

Notes from 1/30/2009. $9.99 growler fill at Whole Foods Bowery. Microbeaded head & lace. The color & look of lightly browned butter. A deep Ray-Ban amber body, with about the same sort of clarity. Banana Runts, licorice, margarine. An earthy, observantly potent maceration of dates & toasted caramel. Smell was deceptive. It's not as rich as it was led up to be. Clove & toffee first off, a tea & butter sweetness, steel, dry toast, & a diligent backwash of yeast. Energetic, beaded carbonation gives a great delivery. Better then the bottle I thought. Yes, sacrilege, I know.

Bottle shared at Colin's place. Many thanks to Leighton for this one. A mostly clear chestnut brown coloured pour with a halo of beige, aroma is semi sweet rich fruit cake, raisin, some age. Flavour is composed of semi sweet. Nutty malts, fruit cake, mint, mellow booze, fruit loaf, white grape. Palate is semi sweet, rounded, mellow carbonation. Held up well.

Bottle. Pours dark brown. Biscuit, spice, heavy spice, plenty of Belgian yeast stuff. Medium body if a bit overcarbed. Decent.
