The brew that opened our doors in 1997, Abbey Ale brought Trappist-style brewing to America.

This full-bodied dubbel pours a deep burgundy with a fluffy head and enchanting aromas. Rich, fruity flavors and hints of honey, caramel and toffee linger before giving way to a long, dry finish. Brewed with Belgian specialty malts and a variety of spices, it pairs well with roasted meats, pâtés and terrines, and soft cheeses.

Bottle, thanks Eddan. Amber with a medium head. Quite a lot of toffee both in the aroma and taste. Also dried fruit, malt and light spices. Vinous and with warming alcohol.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Velvety red body with a thick, lasting beige head. Great lacing. Aroma of toffee, strawberry syrup, wood and creamy malt. Flavour of red apple, salted caramel and yeast. Full body with a creamy mouthfeel. Light carbonation. A brilliant, complex beer.

750ml bottle pours a very murky copper amber with quite a bit of fluffy, off white head. Nose has loads of yeast character, spice, clove, pepper, lots of bubblegum, some ripe banana, some candy. Flavor follows right along, candy, some white pepper, bready notes come through, some caramel, clove, bubblegum, banana. Full bodied, sticky finish. A bit overdone.

sample @ home, thanks veliempojot!
Aroma is sweet with ripe fruits and raisins. Flavour has raisins, some chocolate and ripe fruits. Also some orange peel and spicy notes. Contains some throat-warming alcohol. Quite sweet, but still most likely the best dubbel outside Belgium.

Pours dark brown with a smooth head. Aroma of ripe fruits, plums, raisins, honey, sweet syrup and maltiness. Taste is sweet, sugary, syrupy and ripe fruity with some plums, raisins and maltiness. Finish is sweet, slick and ripe fruity with some syrupy and raisiny notes. Quite sweet but balanced dubbel.

A big bottle shared with my brother-in-law. Pours with a persistent, fluffy tan head with lacing. Rich red-brown colour. Smells of malts, raisins. Tastes of malts, sweet, and Belgian yeasts.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a dark brown body yielding a one finger white foamy head that slowly died over a period of five minutes into a film that slowly dissipated into small islands over top the body, really nice to watch.
The smell had lots of fruit up front such as plum, pear and apple. Some light malts enter in along with some super light Belgian yeast.
The taste was really sweet between the previously mentioned flavors adding in a bit of caramel and raisin.
The palate was about a medium to heavy and really sharp on the tongue, not exactly sessionable.
Overall, I’d say this is a decent dubbel for its style. I’d probably only come back to it on tap.
