It may come as surprise to some, but brewers love lager! That’s right, especially our resident German and Head Brewer, Thorsten. Hailing from the town in which he first put his brewing skills to work, he’s been longing to create a beer like this for a while. What better time than the Highland winter months; the prefect time for the slow, bottom fermenting yeast to work their magic – culminating in this luscious, red beauty of a beer. This delicious München red lager is a more-ish mix of bready malt flavours – balanced by a gentle, spicy bitterness and a clean, crisp finish.

Can. Liggles. Murked up copper amber colour. Thin, just off white head. Nose has some cinder toffee. Dried fruit. Sweet, granary malts. Maybe a whiff of smoke. Taste is light sweet, and a little dry and vinous. Light to medium body. Fine carbonation. Dry and fruity finish. Nice to see such an unusual beer, well under 2 quid, in the local supermarket.

Can picked up at Lidl Inverurie. It pours cloudy deep brown with a medium, foamy beige head. The aroma is earthy, spicy, toasted peanuts, rivita, wood and cheap rye bread. The taste is dry, toothy, rich malt action, brown bread, malt loaf, rivita, toasted nut, leather, dried fruit, fruit cake, touch of spice and tannin with a drying finish. Medium body and fine, foamy carbonation. Not bad for a malt lagerbier.

On keg at the Black Isle Bar, Inverness. Appearance - amber to brown. Nicely proportioned head. Nose - nuts and predominantly toffee. Sweet malt. Taste - more of the same. Very toffee. Some brown bread. Palate - light to medium bodied, creamy and not too sweet which is good. Overall - true to style.

Bottle from Great Grog. Clear amber body with an off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of tea, wood and nuts. Flavour of earth, brown bread and a hint of spice. Thin body with a watery texture. Soft fizz. A nice malty Lager. This is well balanced and refreshing.
