Of all German beers, Uerige Alt has the highest content of bitter constituents. In spite of – or maybe because of – this, our legendary Altbier from Düsseldorf is full-bodied, aromatic, and agreeable.
Our top-fermented specialty has been brewed since 1862, and is made of barley malt, caramel malt, roasted malt, umbel hops, water – and our unique Uerige yeast.
Our Uerige Alt regularly ranks amongst the top ten beers of Germany. It has an alcohol content of 4.7% abv and a minimum shelf life of eight weeks.

50 cl. flip-top bottle @ home, bought @ Trinkgut Kleve. Clear dark amber with a huge off-white head. Caramel, hops and leather/cellar aroma. Taste is fairly bitter with a sour touch which give it a real good drinkability. Not unlike a good English bitter. Massive beer for such a modest ABV. Will drink again.

Bottle from Best One, Brackley Road, Bedford. Tawny brown, almost clear, with a film of off-white head. Caramel malt, wood chips, medicinal herbs in the aroma. Bittersweet taste with an astringent hoppy flavour in the latter half of the sip. Walnuts and green hoppy touches on the aftertaste. I like a good Altbier and was excited to try this, but found it a little underwhelming if solid.

Bottle. Bottle date 04-12-2017, bbf date 29-01-2018. Color: Clear amber to copper, firm off-white head. Taste: Malty, notes of caramel, mildly bitter. Lightly hints of nuts and hints of wood when the beer is getting a little bit warmer. Very smooth, creamy. Nice balance. Very easy drinkable. Wonderful classic beer. Above medium body, soft carbonation.

March 2026. Keep coming back to this one. More grassy and spicy than I remembered. This is like Altbier meeting a very nice Kellerbier. Guess my tastes are changing. At this point, one of my favorite Altbier.
June 2022. Draft at the source. Earthy with ash and caramel. Mildly bitter up front, bitter and hoppy finish. Fresh from the cask at the source this is a whole different beer than the rating 5 years ago. 7.0
Dec 2017. From the bottle. Filled on Oct 9, best by Dec 4. Dark brown with a thin, porous crown that lingers. Aroma is, well, disappointing. Roasted caramel for sure but also earthy tones, trash bin, and a whiff of cat litter. Taste is mildly bitter, a touch citric, lightly metallic at the finish. At a subtle level there’s a lot going on here, not all of it good, but there is a steady, pleasant roasted bitterness that keeps things from slipping out of hand. Body is medium with moderate carbonation. Interesting, but I drank better alts back in the day. 5.6
