Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is a full flavored beer, born of a thirst for adventure. Arthur Guinness was an explorer. He explored the senses. He explored taste. He explored texture. And of course, he was determined to explore pastures new and afar.
In the early 1800s, while other breweries were content to stay close to home, Guinness struck out into unchartered territories, braving the perils of sea travel to export our distinctive beer across the globe.
Brewed with extra hops to preserve the beer in the ships’ holds during voyages of four-to-five weeks in tropical climates, the recipe yielded a powerful drink with bold character.
Originally known as West India Porter, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout has evolved throughout the ages, but its soul has stayed the same.
Pack your bags, whet your lips and dive in.
Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS®.

Opague with a big brown head. Roasted malt aroma with pear. Roasted malt flavor with some sourness, which makes the beer remarkably refreshing. The 7,5% alcohol is absolutely not noticeable. Long roasted bitter finish. Lovely beer!

So I've been trying to find this beer forever, literally for as long as I've been a beer geek, over 20 years. I had long assumed I would need to travel out of the US to ever try it, so imagine my surprise when I was shopping in my local Publix, and saw a lone bottle of Guinness, with a slightly different label (reminiscent of the old 90s labels) sitting by its lonesome on the clearance rack. I approached for a closer look and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Foreign Extra Stout. $1.99. Snatched it the fuck up. Typical appearance, black, opaque, modest tan head. Nose is roast, caramel, restrained. Flavor similar, semi-sweet, notes of roasted barley and coffee. Lightly acrid. Medium bitterness. Soft finish.

Acquired this one from a friend that frequents Haiti regularly. This stout poured a black colour with a light brown, creamy head. Scents include caramel, smoke, ripe fruit, alcohol and a bit of paint thinner. In a good way. First swig was quite different than what we’re used to. Flavours of molasses, toasted coffee, smoke and fig. Finish is slightly sweet with lingering flavours of caramel and brandy.

Bottle picked up at off license near the hotel. Black pour with thick, foamy beige head. Aroma is smoky, ashy with a hint of chocolate. Taste is roasty, campfire, mild sweetness. Mild, sweet bitterness lingers.

Pours reddish black with a thick, smooth cream head. Aroma of malts. Taste is fairly light for a stout, not a lot of mouthfeel. Palate has a wide variety of spice notes including cloves. Good beer.
