Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is a full flavored beer, born of a thirst for adventure. Arthur Guinness was an explorer. He explored the senses. He explored taste. He explored texture. And of course, he was determined to explore pastures new and afar.
In the early 1800s, while other breweries were content to stay close to home, Guinness struck out into unchartered territories, braving the perils of sea travel to export our distinctive beer across the globe.
Brewed with extra hops to preserve the beer in the ships’ holds during voyages of four-to-five weeks in tropical climates, the recipe yielded a powerful drink with bold character.
Originally known as West India Porter, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout has evolved throughout the ages, but its soul has stayed the same.

275ml bottle brewed by Banks, Barbados, 7.5%. Poured black with a lasting tan coloured head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, liquorice, toffee, molasses and black treacle. Quite heavy sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation. More roasted bitterness to finish.

33 cl bottle, Irish version. Poured in to a Snifter. Near black with a creamy lightly tanned head. Sweet aroma with coffee, liqourice, brown cookies, tar and herbal hoppy notes. Taste is sweet. Medium to full body. Dry, herbal bitter finish. A classic!

300ml bottle from Asda. Black with nice sized beige head. Plenty of retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, but what I wasn't expecting was the smokiness coming through. Thick body and low carbonation. Creamy sweetness to start and then a deep coffee bitterness with hints of smokiness. The alcohol comes through strong at the end. Lovely with bags of depth and flavour but definitely not an easy drinking stout, very much one to sip.

Bottle from ASDA. Aah, this is the stuff ! Has an enticing aroma of raisins and malt-loaf. Pours pretty much completely black with a “lively” beige head. Plenty of character in the taste. Dark fruits, chocolate, molasses and roasted malts. Alcoholic strength hides itself well – until it hits the back of the throat ! A sweet and fruity finish to round things off. Far better than “normal” Guinness.

Black body with tan head. Hoppier than normal Guinness with a strong malt aroma. Full taste, malt roast and toast. Long finish.

Creamy tan head stayed on a jet black still body. Sweet malt aroma. Medium bodied, sharp on the front with a cloying back & clean aft. Malt, oat, burnt, roasted, nutty & liquorice tastes with a long tangy finish. First Class from the Macro!

Bottle found in Montserrat. Pours carbonated dark brown with modest light beige foam, medium fake chocolate cake made tinny by too much carbonation. Flavour is molasses with coffee notes. Okay and full mouthfeel. Not exceptional but certainly a reliable and tasty enough stout.
