Up until the Second World War, dark beer was the predominant beer type in the Munich area. The hard water found in the region played a special role in producing this specialty. In his book “Beer International”, the world-renowned English beer writer, Michael Jackson, accurately describes the Ayinger “Altbairisch Dunkel” as: “A good example of its kind. Impenetrably dark with a golden-brown gleam when held up to the light, and with a warm aroma and malty taste, while summoning up coffee taste sensations on going down. It is brewed from five types of malt (two of which are torrified dark), and it is only lightly hopped.” It is produced using the traditional double fermentation process.

Bottle from House of Trembling Madness. Clear amber brown with decent off-white head. Aroma of caramel, brown bread crusts, raisins, toffee; good depth. Taste is semi-sweet with light roasted malt, brown bread, toffee, a bitter spicy hop tingle in the finish. Medium bodied, smooth. The unfiltered version is better but this is still a very good dark lager.

Keg at The Hope, Carshalton ... where's your fucking beer festival ? 29/11/24. One I've most certainly had on tap and in bottle in Germany 20 or so years back ... ketchup tim for Rake my Bier dot com. Chestnut brown topped with a lasting beige head. Nose is stewed fruits, nutty, brown bread, dark malts, figs. Taste comprises fruit slice, herb, malt forward, raisins, toffee, nutty. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. A solid exponent of the style.

Keg at the Hope Carshalton. Aroma is low-key - malty, some fruit. Clear darker brown. Foamy beige head. Fruity. Malty. A bitter edge. Woody. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Nice enough. Easy drinking.
