Crystal malt, amber malt, black malt and roast barley in generous quantities generate a deep black colour and flavours to match. Roast bitterness, coffee and liquorice notes combine in a velvety rich malt texture. A full and sweetish body is balanced by traditional Goldings hops.

Bottle. Nose is fruity hints of coffee blackcurrant shades of chocolate and licorice. Taste is much more bitter than the nose implies, dark chocolate, soy, almost meaty, slightly salty, licorice with coffee in the background. Slick Mouthfeel. Very good

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with minimal cream head, The aroma is mainly malts with hints of alcoholic strength. In the mouth, it is bitter and smoky with dark fruits, roasted malts, alcoholic strength, molasses, liquorice and traces of liquorice. Finish is rather boozy. Very nice – one to be sipped slowly methinks !

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Bottle conditioned. ABV is 10%. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Unusual perfumed aroma, dark fruits, liqueur, some oak, chocolate and liquorice. Very intense perfumed and sweet flavour, surprisingly moderate roastiness, notes of liquorice, hints of tar. Moderate hops in the finish. Not an easy drinking beer, but definitely something out of the ordinary.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - jet black. Crema head but bigger. Nose - raisins, dark chocolate. Taste - raisins, prunes, booze and light wood. Some rum and brown sugar lurking. Palate - medium to full bodied. Nice taper. Decent length. Doesn't make you think, 10%. Overall - very nice. And also because it's not BA, and it's not a pastry.

Black beer, thin head. This isn't like most Russian Imperials I've had. I mean the basic flavours are the same, malty chocolate, liquorice, a bit of sweet fruit and some lactose, but it's not especially rich. It's light and lively. Does have a good warming booziness. It feels lighter than I expected but it's nice.
