Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution
When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.
Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.
Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.
Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

Bottle, at Cardinal. A huge, dense, off-white head leaves lacings. Hazy, golden body. Fruity nose with grapefruit and pine cones. Some citrus zest too. Mostly hoppy flavor, with fruityness, grapefruit and pine cones. Dry, medium bodied and a bit high on carbonation. Lasting bitter finish. A bit too carbonated maybe, but tasteful and pleasant anyway. 131019

Aroma is hoppy with fruits, caramel, pine and some pineapples. Flavour is rather hoppy as promised. It has exotic fruits, some pine, grapefruit and caramel. Sticky and hoppy finish. Gets some distant gooseberry bush notes at the end of the glass in both aroma and flavour side. Good, and the drinkability is quite superb; finished my glass in about 15 minutes.

330 ml bottle at Cardinal. Clear golden body with a big, foamy white head. Nice complex aroma of citric fruit, tropical fruit and pine with some malt. Flavor is sweet malt, fruity, pine and balanced bitter. Medium body and bitter aftertaste. Nice, straight forward balanced IPA.

Fra flaske på Cardinaltreff des-13: meget højt skum. Her er det hops, hops (and glory?). Søtlig bitterhet med tropiske frukter, llitt harpiks og mer enn et værhår av katt.

Clear golden. Large white head. Strong aroma of grape fruit. Fairly bitter taste. Citrus, almost.with hints of feline urine. Aftertaste is not that refreshing.

From a 330ml bottle on 20/10/2013. Pours a cloudy golden orange with a huge foamy white head. features a lovely, fruity, tropical hoppy aroma. Flavour wise, you get everything you’d expect from a big, assertive US IPA - caramel and toffee malt, heaps of citrus, stone and tropical fruits (orange, grapefruit, apricot, peach and passionfruit), with a beautiful big, dry hop kick at the back.The body is quite full and the palate a touch creamy. it’s only falw is that it has way too much carbonation. If it wasn’t for the excessive bubbles, this would be on par with the very best yank IPAs out there. Very impressive.

[10/6/13] Bottle on a park bench near Tower Bridge tube station in London. Hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of citric and piney hops. Flavor has some maltiness, a bit sweet, grapefruity and piney hops, a bit resinous and a finish with rather strong bitterness. Medium-bodied. Good.

Bottle from AlesByMail.co.uk. Nice head with excellent duration. Color is golden. Aroma and taste are rich bitter hops, flowers, fruits, pine, grass and malt. Nice bitter finish.
