Hops + hops + hops!

Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution

When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.

Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.

Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.

Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

Bottle at home, from ABM, 05/06/14. Lightly hazed golden orange with a well appointed just off white head. Nose is juicy hops, orange pith, mango, grapefruit, mandarin. Taste comprises mango, orange pith, citric peel, soft bread dough, pale and toasted malt notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, juicy hop ring in the close. A most decent IPA from ZomerZet - who’d have thought it 5 or so years back?!?

Cask by hand pump at CASK Pub & Kitchen on 7th January 2014. Amber with off-white part-lacing foam. Earthy pungent aroma with exquisite citric tangerine and grapefruit. Rich grapefruit and tangerine plus intense grassiness in-mouth. Grassy, grapefruity finish becoming grassy and bitter on an engaging mouthfeel and substantial body. Exquisite.

Bottle. Just hazy gold with an inch of white head. Aroma of lime leaf, herbal lemon, mango, pine, maybe just a hint of soap. And so it tastes - really not much going on maltwise. Sweet fruits, plenty of citrus flavours, some pine. Dryish at the end. Bitterness is high enough that it doesn’t seem like fruit salad, but more of a closing off for the sweetness than a real kick.
