Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution
When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.
Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.
Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.
Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

330ml bottle. Clear orangey, dark golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Herbal, minimally piney hop aroma, woodruff, nettle, a touch of mint. Taste is herbal hoppy and has the identical woodruff, nettle and mint notes, cautious but noticeable caramel malt basis. IPA with a quite unusual hop bill - or, at least quite unusual, very herbal result of that hop bill.

The 50th rating of this bad bot. Bottle courtesynof nate2g, thanks! Cloudy golden brown color, huge white ice cream cone head. Bottle of floral meadows, dusty lemon, pepper. Taste is a bit astringent, possibly just due to age.

Golden amber color. Very citrusy and passion fruit filled nose. Mouth is medium full bodied with ton of passion fruit and caramel malt back bone. Very very American. The after taste is amazingly filled with passion fruit. I don’t remember a beer with so much passionate fruit from beginning to end. Moderate hoppiness. Wow, I am really grooving on this beer for not being over the top but interesting IPA. Loving Wild beer.

Medium offwhite head. Hazy yellow body. Intense orangey grapefruit aroma with spicy resiny notes. Dry-sweet resiny orangey taste with spicy salty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dry-salty resiny wooden herbal aftertaste with earthy salty grapefruit notes. Kind of harsh, but still nice. (0.33l bottle, from House of Trembling Madness, York.)

Keg at The Lyric, London on 15 June. Grassy and citrus hop aroma, very powerful. Hazy, unfiltered appearance. Bitter grapefruit flavours and lingering hops, but balanced with some fruity sweetness.

Bottle from ’Jacks’ Westholme Stores, Goring-on-Thames 16.07.13 consumed at home 18.07.13 Pours hazy orange with mid sized white head, nice cheesey hoppy nose, in fact a great nose. Very soft in mouth, good thrusting bitterness, brisk lemon, aligned with a just right sweetened edge. Btw I wrote cheesey hops before I even read the back which describes partnering it with a cheddar, so I can safely say that there was no cheesey thought implanted in my head. Nice furriness, touch of sandpaper drying roof of mouth but only a touch. Good, v.good beer. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0

Draught @ Euston Tap, 190 Euston Road, London, Greater London, England NW1 2EF.Sparkling and wit a clear medium orange colour with a large to huge (did go on and on), creamy, good - fair lacing, fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, sweet fruit, moderate to heavy hoppy, grapefruit, orange - citrus. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration, sweet fruit, tropical fruit, peel bitter, funky, sharp peel bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130127]

Bottled at Babajan, Stockholm. Hazy golden, small head. Rich citric grapefruity hop aroma. Mid sweet with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Plenty of citris grapefruit. Long bitter finish. A straightforward hop centric IPA.
