Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution
When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.
Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.
Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.
Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

330ml Bottle - Amber with a small head. Passion fruit, sultanas, peach and pineapple in the aroma. Hoppy taste with a hint of sweetness and notes of grapefruit, pine, passion fruit and apricot. Refreshing and enjoyable, but was expecting a bit more body. Having said that, I am nitpicking somewhat. It’s still a great beer.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; clear amber pour with off white head, big citrus hop aroma, citrus hop comes through in the taste really fresh crisp, I love it when English brewers do USA style beers so well.

Bottle from Theatre of Wine, Greenwich. Cloudy gold pour. Peach and mango aroma. Very smooth. Sweet citrus flavour backed up very nicely with a bit of peach and mango. Smooth fruit finish. Nice.

Nose is lime, hint of lemon and a touch of melon, leads to an undercut of pine. Taste is hoppy, with a very strong grapefruit note leading to a gentle pepper, with a soapy resin finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and full. A very nice American IPA.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden amber colour, foam white head and aroma is sharp lemon citrus & grassy hop. The taste is tangy resin hop bitterness against a malt background with pine, grassy & yeasty notes. Smooth warming mouth feel, medium bodied and lively carbonation. Lingering bitter finish. Quite drinkable IPA.

Keg at The Hanging Bat. Murky golden body with a medium off-white head. Light carbonation. Excellent lacing. Wonderful aroma of lemon, papaya, grapefruit, biscuit and yeast. Sharp grapefruit flavour with subtle peppery, salty and soapy notes. Pine resin in there too. Lingering bitterness. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. An interesting, fruity IPA.

Keg at CP&K. It pours hazy golden yellow with a large white head. The nose is earth, hay, barnyard, orange and tangerine. The taste is earth, pithy citrus, grapefruit, orange, hay, nice level of bitterness, spice and resin with a dry, somewhat citric finish. Medium body, high carbonation and velvety mouth-feel. Pretty tasty.

Bottle from Tomlinson’s Inverness [150213]
Aroma - Same resinous piney hop and a dab of caramel in background
Taste - Lot more bitter zesty hops...still getting that bit of buttery light caramel in background.....still tastes very much it’s alcohol content to me though
Palate - Very bitter hopping...Finish same as main flavour...lingering astringent bitter tail
Overall - Better than the keg....but rather rough around the edges for me - too astringent....actually 3.3 > 3.2

Straw colour, hazy, thin white head. Aroma - resinous piney hops, touch of grass, pretty hoppy. Taste of piney hops, resinous hops, dab of grassy hop, background of pale sweet malts, slighty buttery, found it rather boozy
Palate - Medium carb and body, texture oily. Finish as main flavour, with some alcohol in the tail.
Overall - OK - not bad - but the alcohol was pretty noticeable...there are better beers of this style out there....maybe the bottle is better, sometimes keg isn’t as good....

Bottle from Corks Of Cotham, Bristol. Pours amber with a slight white head. Sharp, pine needle and tropical fruit aroma, with a touch of sweetness. Flavour had some pineapple and grapefruit, with some cereal malts leading to a lingering, dryish finish which left the tongue tingling. Good.

Bottle shared at The Kernel, thanks to Thomas. Pours clear yellow with a fine, white cream head. Jammy citrus nose, orange. Medium sweet flavor, some dry citrus, light grass. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Mild sticky sweet finish, orange and lime, some earth. Decent stuff.
