Hops + hops + hops!

Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution

When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.

Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.

Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.

Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

Bottle. Pours hazy yellow, with a finger thick somewhat rocky head. Aroma is spicy hops, with tropical notes of peach and yuzu. Medium body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is bitter hops, with grapefruit and orange peel, as well as zesty citrus and tropical notes. Lingering bitter finish.

Bottle from Sourced Market at St Pancras, cant find a BB date but I bought it 2 months ago, large sample. Slight hazy golden color, short frothy slight off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy, citrus, grapefruit, slight biscuity malt. Quite bitter in taste, bit citrussy, some caramel sweetness. I expected some wild yeast as well, but it seems to be pretty clean instead. Medium body, soft to medium carbonation. Quite tasty.

Flaske 500ml fra Vinmonopolet, Tromsø Sentrum. Veldig lys gyldenbrun. Uklar. Lavt luftig skum. Fersken. Smaken det samme. Antydning til plommer. Balansert. Svakt syrlig ettersmak. Avslutter tørt.

Bottle at home. The colour is hazy orange with a medium, light beige head. Fresh aroma of grapefruit, citrus, fruity hops, oranges, mango and mown grass. The flavour is also fruity with more mango, orange peel and grassy hops in the end. Has a slick mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. An incredible fresh and fruity IPA. Well balanced and easy drinking.

33cl bottle. Appearance - golden orange with a nice lacy head. Nose - orange to apricot with a creamy backdrop. Taste - mandarin with a yeasty edge. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy and yeasty texture and a long dry finish. Overall - wouldn’t say it was madness but actually very agreeable.

330ml bottle, cheers Ash! Pours pale gold with a light haze, thin white head. Aromas of resin, pine, grapefruit, sherbet. Taste is bitter, light sherbet. Quite thin body, tastes like it might have Brett yeast in. Gets sweeter as it goes down, balances out finally. Decent.

330ml bottle bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Frothy off-white head with fine duration and crocheted lacing. Cloudy, pale golden body. Fresh citrus on the nose with herbal dryness beneath. Fresh tropical fruity flavours leading to a well-rounded dry bitter finish of grapefruit shells. Medium bodied with splendid drinkability. Enjoying (Tromsø 18.09.2014).

Bottle from GBBF 2014 and drunk at home. Hazy orange amber colour lasting white head. Fresh yellow grapefruit fruity aroma. Light in mouth. It?s hoppy, man is it hoppy. Light creamy fresh. Grapefruit and then white peppery hoppy rather than full on bitter finish. Light as I say in the mouth. It?s like drinking sunshine. I like the aroma and the inital flavour. Then this slightly metallic white pepper kicks in. Hops remain strong throughout. Just not quite there. Can re rate thanks Fin. 3.8. Full of hop goodness.
