This is a Belgian-style strong ale but with an American fusion twist dreamt up by Epic. Using authentic Belgian-style yeast, this is a malt-driven beer with Maris Otter malt as a base and a hint of Pilsner malt. For the first twist we use smoked cherry wood malt that works it’s magic, bringing a smoky sweetness to the caramel malts and a bit of peat flavor as well. This ale then really marries together when it hits the cask. The entire batch aging in the whiskey barrels nicely dries out the perceived sweetness of the caramel malt leaving an almost scotch like taste, with smoke, bourbon, hints of vanilla, wood, aged fruit from the Belgian yeast and some peat. A very, very special extremely flavorful strong ale made for sharing.

Bottle from Systembolaget web shop. Hazy dark reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, lots of caramel, dried fruit and a little bonfire. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Sweet and moderate bitter finish with warming alcohol. Soft and smooth. Very close to a barley wine. 201013

Draft sample at Epic Brewing taproom, Denver. Pours clear amber with a ring tan head. Aroma of vanilla, massive oak, bourbon, molasses, caramel, raisins, booze. Flavour is heavy sweet and bitter. Thick chewy syrupy mouthfeel. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Epic brew!

Tap at Denver tap room - supposedly 11.5 percent - seriously boozy beer, here - hot and very sweet, with no belgian character to speak of - some vanilla and toasted coconut - very high sweetness throughout - slick, oily mouthfeel - finish has some nice peat/scotch notes (which I guess is the "smoked" part), but otherwise kind of a hot mess.

A dark amber ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, dark fruits overlayed with smoked bacon, light Brett, light acidity. In mouth, a nice sweet caramel malt with good smoked character, bacon, dark fruits, quite nice. Bottle at Downtown Brew fest LV 2013.

Bottle - Caramel candy and a bit of oak. Clear copper with a thin brown head. Caramel, toffee, oak and a bit of grain. A wonderfully mellow ale, a bit on the sweeter side but still very nice. Draft - As above but with noticeable smoke. Still very good.

Bottle. Amber colour with an off-white head. Not sure if this was a bad bottle, a bad batch or if it is supposed to be like this. Stale aroma of burned rubber. Flavour is similar to the aroma, rubbery with hints of what I guess can be caramel and burned wood.

Smallish beige head. Clear deep dark red body with little particles floating in it. Smoky toffee aroma with perfumy fruity notes. Odd. Dry-sweet dried fruit, wild berries, and cocos taste with spicy notes. Mild, soft, slightly hot mouthfeel. Fullish body. Dryish fruity blackberry aftertaste with spicy cocos and earth notes. Lovely. Highly drinkable, yet subtle and different. (0.65l bottle, from Systembolaget Nordstan, Göteborg.)

Bomber. Release #18, 10.3% ABV. Pours cloudy orange-brown with a quickly-collapsing beige head; leaves a ring of big-bubbly foam. Aroma seems a little faint, but I get caramel, dark fruit, vinegar, wood, apple core, orange candy circus peanuts, funk. The taste thankfully makes up for the simultaneously odd/a-little-too-faint aroma; it’s sweet, smoky, woody, a bit boozy, a little tart. Body is medium, carbonation fairly soft. Nice beer that I would definitely have again. Addendum: the aroma does open up more as it sits, leaving a decent, yet odd-smelling beer, making me up my aroma score. Also, some nice coconut flavors come out after a bit, making a good beer taste great, making me up both the taste and overall scores.
