This is a Belgian-style strong ale but with an American fusion twist dreamt up by Epic. Using authentic Belgian-style yeast, this is a malt-driven beer with Maris Otter malt as a base and a hint of Pilsner malt. For the first twist we use smoked cherry wood malt that works it’s magic, bringing a smoky sweetness to the caramel malts and a bit of peat flavor as well. This ale then really marries together when it hits the cask. The entire batch aging in the whiskey barrels nicely dries out the perceived sweetness of the caramel malt leaving an almost scotch like taste, with smoke, bourbon, hints of vanilla, wood, aged fruit from the Belgian yeast and some peat. A very, very special extremely flavorful strong ale made for sharing.

Bottle at the Funky 7, Brooklyn. Pours amber with an off-white head. Has a modest smoke aroma with subtle fruits and Belgian yeast. Fairly sweet flavor with a dynamic maltiness, some hard alcohol, toffee and caramel, yeast and spice. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet, lightly warming finish with notes of bourbon, mild smoke and caramel. Very nice overall.

OK, I struggled with this one. Dave described it as a "love it or hate it" kind of beer - I don’t think I’m in either camp. It just confused me. I expected a typical smokey aroma, but it was more like apricot jam. The flavor had a sweet/sour start that changed to burnt duck fat, with a bit of whiskey and vanilla as it warmed. The complexity was there, but there were too many flavor clashes for me, and it seemed a bit unbalanced. I was very happy with the other Epic brews I tried, so I think I’ll stick to them.

Bomber at the 5th Annual Epic Beer Tasting in Richmond, VA, November 28, 2010. Pours a hazy amber with a thin white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of smoke, caramel and faint fruity notes. The taste is toffee, caramel, sugar, smoke and some fruity notes. Medium bodied. Fairly sweet, reminding me a good barbecue sauce. Interesting beer.

Courtesy of douglas88. Pours hazy nearly copper with brown hues creating a pretty full opacity and supporting a light tan head. The aroma is plenty of smokiness creating a band-aid sense and then Belgian yeast notes, sweet fruity apricots and smooth smoke dried pork at the end of the draw. The taste is smooth bold rubber smoke notes heading into a pleasing level of dried smoked bacon, Belgian yeastiness, apricot, brown sugar and more smooth dry bacony smoke at the end. Nice.
