This is a Belgian-style strong ale but with an American fusion twist dreamt up by Epic. Using authentic Belgian-style yeast, this is a malt-driven beer with Maris Otter malt as a base and a hint of Pilsner malt. For the first twist we use smoked cherry wood malt that works it’s magic, bringing a smoky sweetness to the caramel malts and a bit of peat flavor as well. This ale then really marries together when it hits the cask. The entire batch aging in the whiskey barrels nicely dries out the perceived sweetness of the caramel malt leaving an almost scotch like taste, with smoke, bourbon, hints of vanilla, wood, aged fruit from the Belgian yeast and some peat. A very, very special extremely flavorful strong ale made for sharing.

Poured from bottle at SAVOR. Aroma was smoke, touch of wood. Flavor was smoky, with some sweet caramel malts, with smoke, bourbon, and smoke. The barrel helped to cut down on the smoke, but it wasn’t my favorite brew - the food I had that was pared with it made it bearable.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, batch 9, bottled 11/7/2011. Pours hazy reddish brown color with a small 1 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention that reduces to a thin ring of lace. Some minimal spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big bourbon, caramel, banana, clove, toffee, molasses, apple, raisin, oak, and yeast spices. Some pretty nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of big caramel, toffee, raisin, apple, molasses, pepper, clove, banana, oak, vanilla, butterscotch, light bourbon, and light yeast spices. Lingering notes of caramel, toffee, bourbon, oak, molasses, dark fruit, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Some nice balance of malty flavors, with no cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming present after the finish. Quite drinkable but is still definitely a sipper. Overall this is a nice and very enjoyable Belgian style ale. I really did not notice much smokiness at all; however, it had a nice and quite complex malt flavor profile from the bourbon barrel aging. Very enjoyable to sip on.

22 oz bottle. Orangeish amber pour, very lightly hazed, off-white head. Fruity berry, tropical aromas, whiskey barrel, toffee and hint of smoke. Flavor again tropical fruit whiskey flavors, oak, toffee and smoky hints. I was honestly a bit worried about this, as it seemed like kind of a "throw things together" idea, but they come together nicely and become something unique. Nicely done.

Pours plum with a medium off white head. Aroma is candied sugar, smoke, caramel. Flavor is delicious, lots of spicy oak, smoke, the cherrywood comes through very well. Lots of stone fruit in the finish. Awesome stuff.

Tap @ Avery, doing the 10th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours dark golden with a small offwhite head. Aroma of malt, yeast, oak, caramel, oak. Taste is malty, yeast, light smoke, sweet ripe apples, aok, bourbon. Medium body, soft carbonation. 090312

Draft. Amber beerw ith a light tan head. Nice smoke and malt aroma. Caramel and malt flavor with oak. Medium bodied. Caramel and sweet malt lingers with oak.

Kumquat and cherry cordial on the nose. Cloudy amber, still and headless. Flavor is a strong and even blend of peat and apricot notes. Lemon zest is alos present. Peat becomes more smokey in the finish. Alcohol is noticeable but not overly intrusive. The fruity character imparted by the base Belgian ale really distinguishes this beer. There can’t be many beers like this. It is a new experience for me, and a pleasurable one.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of arminjewell. Thanks A! Cloudy brown appearance with a tan head. Oaky, smoky meaty, dark roasty malty, caramel aroma. Smoky, meaty, toasty caramel malty, toffee, woody, rich flavor. Fuck this is a great beer. Good smokiness, good meatiness, good oak, good caramel malt.

Sample at Brews Cafe. This beer pours a brownish-orange color with a creamy sand-colored head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of burnt wood, bready malt and grass. Medium body with a smokey character and flavors of sweet malt, earth and oak. Fruit in the background throughout. The finish is oaky and smokey ironically enough with a sweet malt aftertaste. Above average overall.
