This is a Belgian-style strong ale but with an American fusion twist dreamt up by Epic. Using authentic Belgian-style yeast, this is a malt-driven beer with Maris Otter malt as a base and a hint of Pilsner malt. For the first twist we use smoked cherry wood malt that works it’s magic, bringing a smoky sweetness to the caramel malts and a bit of peat flavor as well. This ale then really marries together when it hits the cask. The entire batch aging in the whiskey barrels nicely dries out the perceived sweetness of the caramel malt leaving an almost scotch like taste, with smoke, bourbon, hints of vanilla, wood, aged fruit from the Belgian yeast and some peat. A very, very special extremely flavorful strong ale made for sharing.

Bottle at Chriso’s 2012 Pre-GBBF tasting. It pours cloudy deep amber, with a thin white head. The nose is wood, touch of smoke, spice, vanilla, almond and toasted coconut. The taste is oak, smoke, caramel, raisin, currant, date, some alcohol warmth, meatiness and vanilla, with a dry, woody finish. Smoke is actually more restrained than anticipated. Medium body and fine carbonation. Smooth and well balanced.

Pre GBBF shindig 2012. Amber clear thin lasting beige. Oak is too much and is not great. Just why do people make their beers taste this way. Too oaky

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours a cloudy, murky dark orange with a small beige head. Aroma of very lightly smoked notes and a little oak - not much here. Flavour of smoke upfront, folllowed by the oak notes - barely tastes Belgian-styled. Weird profile on this one - not sure what was attempted here or if it was reached, but doesn't do much for me.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, hops, and fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of over ripe fruits, caramel, hops, and malt, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

Tasting at Papsø’s, Release #4, 9.9% ABV
Cloudy orange.amber color, with small head. The aroma shows a delicate vanilla oak, and sweet malt, balanced and less cloying than most similar beers; then there is a trace of smoke. It has a full body; the malt and caramel provide a sweet component, with fudge (appreciated) and oranges (less); then the vanilla oak and light smoke too; the bitterness seems low, at least overwhelmed by the other components, including high alcohol perception.
It may be cloying in big quantities, and it’s too boozy, but quite pleasant overall.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of nimbleprop. Pours a cloudy opaque, murky orange with a tiny off-white head. Sweet bourbony aroma, quite some toffee. Rich body, lowish carbonation, very sweet toffee and Bourbon with only a very subtle whiff of the peaty smoke. Quite some heavy booze in the finish. Interesting. 160612
