A hazy orange beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet alcoholic and hop soup like, combined with strong notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet spicy - especially coriander comes thru, but also with light notes of caramel. The end is very dry and spicy. I find the body thin, but at the same time the alcohol leaves a warming sensation in the mouth.

Bottle. Clear copper colour with a tan head. Fruity malty aroma with some hints of hops. Sweet malty hoppy flavor. Long malty warming finish.

Dark copper pour with loose, thin head. Aroma of malt with slight hop pine notes. Flavor of malt (roasted) and sweet, ripe fruit especially raisin. A hop bite and bitter aftertaste. Some spice notes. Long finish. Body is thin and highly carbonated.

Bottle: Poured a light brown color ale with a medium light brown foamy head with average retention. Aroma of spices is quite dominant with a nice touch of sweet malt. Taste of spruce(?) and pine is quite dominant with some liquorice. Hops seems to be a bit subdued and body is a bit thinner then expected. Interesting beer but not necessarily something that I would seek out often.

(Bottle 65 cl) Clear, dark amber with a handsome head that leaves a very pretty lacework. Fresh, hoppy somewhat grapefruitish aroma. Medium body with distinct caramel malt - and not so much more. Nice all right but not very christmasy in my book. 291205 and 061006

Thin light brown head that quickly diminishes to a light film. Dark reddish-brown color. Light bitter aroma. Fairly hoppy flavor.

Rerate 05/09/07: Sample at Firewaters in Atlantic City. Pours dark amber/copper with a medium thick and foamy light beige head. Stringy lacing. The aroma is nutty and malty, along with some hops. Medium-bodied with a floral hops character, along with some sweet malt and caramel. The finish is bitter hops with some spices. Better than the last time I tried it.

01/23/05 (3.3): On draught at Winking Lizard. Dark copper color with a thin and fluffy off-white head. Thin lacing. The aroma is mildly hoppy with flashes of spice and roasted malt. Medium-bodied and not as hoppy as expected. Tastes like any straightforward holiday beer, mildy spiced with earthy malt and hops. The finish is pretty short and spicy. Rogue could definitely do better with this.

This seems to be always overstocked and on sale wherever I go. I was wondering what was up with that, but after trying it, I wonder no more. Fresh bottle purchased at Beers of the World by GoldenSpunky. Good deep red-gold color with a typical off-white creamy head from rogue. Smells and tastes like a grapefruit nightmare. It’s so bitter it’s laughable. Even having a general dislike of hops and their overusage, I respect Rogue for their dedication to unpasteurised and bottle conditioned beers. I even liked Rogue John and can tolerate Old Crusty. This, however, is disgusting. Disgustingly unbalanced. Why brewers feel there is some unspoken competition to brew the hoppiest beer they can brew is beyond me. The sad thing, like the case with so many unbalanced beers (lindemans kriek immediately comes to mind) is that there is a good beer being strongarmed by the hops. Saint Rogue Red is a great beer. Saint Rogue Red dry hopped is probably an even better beer. Saint Rogue Red double hopped, it seems, is not.

Rogue is a bit hit or miss for me. I had not had the opportunity to try this one before and given the description I was quite intrigued. Sampled from an oddly printed 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a mahogany color with a medium sized tan head. There was a strong hop aroma. The flavor was strong with hops with a sweet malty finish. The hops linger well on the tongue. This is a nice drinking hoppy beer you could enjoy all night.
