American Saison Ale (Smokestack Series)

When our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in fermenter number seven. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

With its balance, carbonation, and complex flavor profile, Tank 7 is one of the ultimate food-pairing beers in existence. But don't just take our word for it, esteemed chefs from around the country agree. We've sat down with a bunch of them and asked them seven questions over a Tank 7.

Just never got around to rating this. Have had many years, draft and bottles. A clear, deep beeswax-golden with a small, but dense, white head. At best, this has a lovely, gentle Brett nose full of honey, lemon, lime and guava. White and black pepper complement, without overwhelming, and there's a rich, honey-like maltiness, that in worse years, gets too overwhelming. As well, the Brett has a penchant for getting a bit too punchy and tangy. But especially in early iterations, this was a solid, malty, mostly dry, Brett-forward belgian ale. Maybe not quite so saison-y, but delicious at its peak years, nonetheless. But of course, in its non-peak years, this is a massive chore to drink, with sluggish malt character, twangy Brett and too much American hop character.

Bottle via Beermalade online tasting. Med-thin body initially, later dries out completely. Quite high carbonation. Lots of flowery character, slightly grassy, straw. Reminds me of some flowery white wines pretty heavily. Malt in the background, pretty dry. ABV relatively well hidden - light warmth present but that is all. Refreshing sipper. Very good.

Pours amber with a fluffy white head. Aroma of slightly ferrous yeast, stone fruit. Taste has relatively plain malt, full bodied grains, yeast, lingering dark fruits. Palate has more lightly ferrous notes, malty. Interesting.
