American Saison Ale (Smokestack Series)

When our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in fermenter number seven. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

With its balance, carbonation, and complex flavor profile, Tank 7 is one of the ultimate food-pairing beers in existence. But don't just take our word for it, esteemed chefs from around the country agree. We've sat down with a bunch of them and asked them seven questions over a Tank 7.

Bottle from an online shop drunk while grilling in the rain. Light hazy gold with a nice fine head. Nose is clean mild sour with a hint of caramel and lemon. Super fine carb, excellent light sour taste, balanced body with a really fantastic mouthfeel from the great carbonation. WOW.

This review was imported from my RateBeer ratings.

It's been a few years since I first reviewed this beer, so I felt it was time to reevaluate.

12 oz. bottle. 8.5% ABV, 45 IBU, Enjoy By: 07DEC2024

AROMA: Moderate scents of pine, grapefruit, and pepper which is then followed by just a whiff of banana at the very end. It is a very enticing aroma!

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear golden color with an incredibly tall, white, medium-frothy head, that dissipates slowly with excellent lacing. It looks incredible in my clear, Pilsner glass!

TASTE: Slightly sweet on the front end, with just a hint of bitterness on the back end. The predominant flavor is grapefruit with minor flavors of pine, candied lemon, and hops. The sweet/bitter level is nicely balanced and doesn't really lean towards either end of the spectrum. However, all the flavors seem a little muted compared to my original review.

MOUTHFEEL: The body is thinner than I remember and now teeters on the thin/medium border, with a smooth texture and slightly high amount of carbonation (which is probably why it had such a large head).

OVERALL: I am quite impressed with this beer as there is little that I can find wrong with it. It's quite light on the palate and has mild sweetness and bitterness qualities, along with a very pleasing aroma. All of which makes for an extremely easy drinking beer. Unfortunately (for me), this is not the same beer I raved about a few years ago, as the formula has obviously been tweaked. This is evidenced by the 38 IBU rating listed on this site (and others), while the bottles (and carton) that I just purchased, all say 45 IBU. Don't get me wrong, I still greatly enjoy this beer, and will happily buy this again. It's just that I much more enjoyed the old formula. Mostly, due to the flavors being more pronounced in the old vintage.

My original review, and ratings, from 01/29/2021 is below:

16 oz. can. 8.5% ABV.

AROMA (7/10): Heavenly scents of sweet citrus, pepper, and banana. My mouth is already salivating!

APPEARANCE (4/5): Pours a clear golden color with an incredibly tall, white, medium-frothy head, that dissipates slowly with excellent lacing.

TASTE (8/10): Slightly sweet on the front end, with just a hint of bitterness on the back end. My first sip tasted like watery grapefruit juice, and I became a bit disappointed. However, my second (and subsequent) sips resulted in the full flavors coming through. So I guess my taste buds just needed a jumpstart!

The most prominent flavors are grapefruit, lemon, hops, grass, and pepper. There is also a hint of spice if you let it sit on your tongue for a few seconds.

MOUTHFEEL (5/5): Medium bodied with a smooth texture and slightly high amount of carbonation (which is probably why it had such a large head).

OVERALL (17/20): I am quite impressed with this beer as there is little that I can find wrong with it. It's quite light on the palate and has mild sweetness and bitterness qualities, along with an incredibly intoxicating aroma (note: do yourself a favor and pour it into a glass with a large bowl so that you can inhale the aroma while you drink). All of which makes for an extremely easy drinking beer that (in my case) could become addictive. And there lies my "gripe", it's so tasty, and so easy to drink, that I would love to make it one my "everyday" beers that I drink all the time. Unfortunately, it's just a little on the pricey side to do that. However, it's not overly expensive, so I will definitely be buying this 4 or 5 times a year.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a large thick creamy white head. light aromas of bananas, cloves, apples, pears, herbs and spice. Taste has more of the notes from the aroma, more herbs and peppery spice, with a light citrus bitterness. Light to medium body, fairly low carbonation with a fruity, citrus and spicy finish. Subtle and elegant flavours but very nice indeed. Really enjoying this one. Excellent.

I haven't had beer for some time as I was sick and this one has been on my to-drink shelf on the front, so let's go with this one. Smell- medium strong , herbal, hops, citrus, a bit of yeast and caramel. Foam- thin, hops, acidic tones more hops and a bit of Belgian yeast again trumped with hops and bit of sourness. Head is large, white color, with a bit of yellow to it. Sticks, but goes down reasonably fast after pouring. Appearance- nice looking bottle cap, the bottle design is simple, yet appealing. Clear orange-amber, low carbonation on sides but inside looks rather medium. Later goes hazy. From - snifter Taste - bitter-sweetness, yeast, caramel and then an intense hit of hops mixed with sweetness and some alcohol. Feels quite hoppy for me but it is always accompanied by sweetness and some Belgian notes in the mix. An interesting mix for sure, I don't hate it, but I am not huge fan as well, still perfectly drinkable and alcohol is quite visible in the background.

Un nez de grains, de fût de chêne et de houblon Nelson Sauvin... En bouche, les agrumes et l'ensemble de l'oeuvre rappellent certains vins blanc très sucrés.
