Theobroma is a celebration of chocolate, the food of the gods.
This Ancient Ale is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras that revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilizations to toast special occasions.
The discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1,200 B.C. As per the analysis, Dogfish Head's Theobroma (translated into "food of the gods") is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs (from our friends at Askinosie Chocolate), honey, chilies and annatto (fragrant tree seeds).
It's light in color, not what you expect from your typical chocolate beer (not that you'd be surprised that we'd do something unexpected with this beer!).
This beer is part of our Ancient Ales series -- along with Midas Touch, Chateau Jiahu, Sah'tea and Ta Henket -- so step back in time and enjoy some Theobroma.

Tap at APEX, PDX, 26/05/13. Lightly hazed golden with a thin white head. Nose is honey, light spice, grain, cereals, straw, touch of citrus. Taste comprises honey, grain, grass, touch of sugar. Full end of medium bodied, fine carbonation, sweet finish with herbal notes. Ok for the experiment it is but wouldn’t look to revisit!

On draft at the Gaithersburg brew house. Pours a cloudy orange amber with an off white head. Mild malt aroma. Nice blending of flavors with non of the special ingredients dominating. Quite drinkable and unusual.

Bottle. Sweet white grape, light cocoa aroma, and felt (not smelled) a slight chili tingle in the nose. Hazy honey gold with a small white head, suspended white sediment. Very similar to the nose, white grape, chili, and light cocoa flavor. Medium body, soft carbonation, light chili heat.

Bottle. Fresh white grape, honey and cocoa aroma. Golden yellow with flocculation and moderate head. Sweet light cocoa and grape flavor with a spicy pepper finish. Quite enjoyable - would have liked more a chile kick.

Draught at The Old Toad Dogfish Head Fest 5. Golden orange color. Flat. Fruity nose: cherry, grape, spices, cinnamon. Spicy sweet malt falvor, cinnamon and cereals, chocolate, light tropical fruit and citrus. Nicely balanced. Probably my favorite of the night.

Draught. Not as dark as I had expected. Chocolate in the aroma. A light chile presence with the malt in the flavour. Over all, tasted rather like a Belgian strong. And I know there were no Belgian monks in the monks before 1492. Unless some came with Prince Madoc or Leif Eriksson or Joannes of Guetaria

Weak ginger nose. Cloudy amber, thin head, full of fine floaties. Honey and orange flavor, ginger overtones. While not pervasive chilies can be detected at times. Medium body, weighty but not hot, as the alcohol is quite well concealed. Sahtea was strange, Pangaea was even weirder. This is somewhere between the two on the Dogfish scale of bizarre. Actually, it’s flavor is somewhat similar to Pangaea. It’s enjoyable, but is it worth the effort and cost? The answer is yes if you value creativity. and innovation.

Aroma is stale, sweetish and slightly tart with honey and citron. Flavour is sweetish and somewhat tart with honey, hay, hints of citron and apricot. Some vegetable-like chili and cocoa powder do occur at the end of the glass. A bit too much honey here.
