Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create an almost opaque, wonderfully silky and smooth textured ale with a complex medium dry palate and bittersweet finish.

500ml bottle delivered from Blue Boar and drunk at home. Very dark brown, opaque with a ring of tan/khaki head. Some chocolate in the aroma, some coffee, some ash. Sweet taste with a light grape tartness, a touch of black pepper. Slightly watery body buoyed up by fairly heavy carbonation. It is a decwnt beer by any standard but I'm surprised by the mega-high rates.

355 ml bottle. Murky dark brown, beige colored fluffy head. Liquorice, dark chocolate, caramel and toffee, roasted almost burnt malt, citrus notes, marzipan, roasted pistachios, lactose. Mild roasty bitterness, malty sweetness. Medium bodied, oily texture, soft carbonated, dry malty finish. Outstanding.

Aroma has oats and fresh coffee. Rather sweet, but also bitter taste with roasted malt. Firm coffee and chocolate flavors. Good lacing. Delicious and complex beer with a long finish.

Bottle, 0.55l. Black pour, two finger frothy beige head. Long lasting, excellent retention. Lots of lacing on the glass. Mild on the nose, roasted malt, cocoa and dark chocolate. Medium body, soft carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel, chewy texture. Roasty bittersweet taste and aroma. Caramel malt, roasted malt, mild coffee notes, cocoa and chocolate. Subtle dried fruits in the background. Oats. Slightly ashy. Mild lingering bitterness. Short to medium finish. Solid stout.

6 month old Imperial pint bottle A: Exits the bottle a clear syrupy brown coffee color. Pours a big thick tan blanket of foam with dogged retention, lacing in sheets atop a black body. S: Heavy chocolate and light coffee over dark brown toasty bread. T: Moderate bitterness and roast go along with the expected dark chocolate and coffee notes. Dry and lightly sweet at the end. M: Silky smooth oatmeal texture and ample finely beaded carbonation give an elegant mouthfeel to the fairly light body. Wet sticky finish. O: Extremely nice, approachable with sensible strength. Not burnt heavy or flat. A stout you can drink anytime.
