Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create an almost opaque, wonderfully silky and smooth textured ale with a complex medium dry palate and bittersweet finish.

Bottle 355ml. Deep brown to black pour with well-formed beige head. The nose is well united esters, roasted malts, cream, dried fruit, coffee beans. Complex. Light body. More roast on tongue. Medium dry. The same complexity. Light bitterness. A perfect session stout.

Bottle from Bury Lane Farm Shop, Herts. Coffee with sugar and cream aroma. Some liquorice in the tail. Glossy black. Thick beige head. Medium bitter. Coffee (no sugar), liquorice, roast. Gains sweetness in the finish, tart berries. Underlying creamyness. Medium bodied. Watered down oil. Lively carbonation, potentially overly so. Low key but astringent finish. Decent enough but the amount of carbonation and astringent part mar it for me. Not as good as I remembered.

Bottle at the Rising Sun in Smithfield. A beautiful colour in the glass and a lovely long-lasting head that went right to the bottom. Toasty malts and a lovely smooth velvetiness in my mouth. However, for me anyway, there was a strong and quite overpowering sweetness. I am glad I had it, but it really didn’t do it for me.

0.355 l bottle from ’EDEKA Preller’ (Breckerfeld), best before August 2017. Clear, very dark red to black with a medium large, foamy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish, malty and slightly roasty aroma of milk chocolate, hazelnut, some coffee and hints of dark ripe fruits. Sweetish-malty, medium roasty taste of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, some hazelnut, vanilla and a touch of dark ripe fruits, followed by a short, medium roasty-bitter finish. Medium body, just minimally creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Simple but classic Oatmeal Stout, quite nice!
