It’s back! Our mythical Flying Mouflan is a resiny, caramel, chocolately giant of a barleywine ale. This strong and alluring beer originally took flight as Scratch #4 way back when, and we’ve since taken to aging it in bourbon barrels. This version, however, isn’t aged on wood. It’s the OG Flying Mouflan you know and love, and it’s only available on draft at the brewery for a limited time!

Hazy deep red - amber beer. Good pale tan head. Semi soft and semi dry palate. Sweet fruit salad sweets with dashes of coca cola and a pinch of spice. Soft creamy malt base. Adds up to a sumptuous sweet and fruity beer. Finishes with a trace of aniseed alcohol and a carbonated nip.

Bottle at THE Barley Wine Tasting, London. I brought this fella along, after aging it just shy of two years. Pours rich, ruby-brown with a thick, tan foam head. Nose holds aged pine, caramel, berries. Big sweet flavor with toasty caramel and pine, dry fruits, faint earth, ripe citrus. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. Medium to big sweet finish with brown sugar, molasses, faint earthy hops, more pine, dry fruits. Good balance, nice character.

Initially, did not think of this as a BW. Been wanting to try this bullshit for a while. I think I couldn’t bring myself to pay the extra cash for this one. On tap athe bocktown monaca, nice place. Muted IPA aroma. Brownish yet clear. Nice lacing fer sure. Weird floral perfumy thing developing on the taste buds. A piercing bitter thing strats happenen in the back of the throat, not dull, sharp and pointed. Not thinking much about this brew. Distracting like a loud MP player in the back of a classroom. This ipa thing, without being an ipa is causing me great discomfort. Hey, now I see its a barelywine, heheh; yes it does hide its 10% rather well. Back of throat rude funny hicky poaking the point of an artificial hop in there. I am however, surprized to find some fizz in this BW; makes it more like a strong american ale. How can this be in the same cat as harvey’s? hehheh

Bottle, thanks to Leighton at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours very dark brown, with a minimal tan head. The nose is juicy dark fruit: prune, raisin, plum, as well as light roastiness, caramel and chocolate. The taste is wood, earth, charcoal, bitter and milk chocolate, dark fruit, caramel and some meatiness, with a dry finish. Pretty boozy. Full body and fine carbonation. A solid barley wine, but nothing spectacular.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy amber with a small white head. The aroma is vanilla and oak. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet malt and vanilla with caramel and light dry finish. A good barleywine from Troegs.

Bottle: Poured a deep burgundy color ale with a rather larger foamy head with good retention and some pretty good lacing. Aroma of piney hops and caramelized malt is really nice. Taste is also a nice mix between some quite strong piney hops with light resin notes and some caramelized malt with light notes of toffee and well balanced residual sugar level. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Pretty solid interpretation of American hops heavy barleywine that I wouldn’t mind revisiting again in the future.

22oz bottle, bought straight from the brewery. Poured a slightly dark reddish color with a off-white head. Aroma was toffee, caramel, more hopped than expected. Flavor was caramel, toffee, slightly earthy hops, with a notable amount of mild citrus. Enjoyed.
