It’s back! Our mythical Flying Mouflan is a resiny, caramel, chocolately giant of a barleywine ale. This strong and alluring beer originally took flight as Scratch #4 way back when, and we’ve since taken to aging it in bourbon barrels. This version, however, isn’t aged on wood. It’s the OG Flying Mouflan you know and love, and it’s only available on draft at the brewery for a limited time!

Cask version at Winking Lizard’s 2nd Annual Real Ale Fest (03/27/10): The beer pours an amber-brown color with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malt, toffee and citrus. Medium to full body with flavors of caramel malt, citrus, toffee and light hops. The finish is molasses and toffee and leaves a malty aftertaste. Above average overall.

’09 Bottle - thanks ditmier. Leathery mahogany pour with a thick, creamy beige head. Nice aroma is citrus and florals, sweet from candied sugar, caramel, and lightly vinous. At first sip, it seems aged... sweet and soothing blend of citrus and florals (faded a bit), caramel, and more candied sugar. Soft finish is nice and warming.

22oz bottle pours a translucent, slightly watery, nut brown with a creamy slightly off white head. Aroma reminded me of Nugget Nectar, sweet, candy, oranges, grapefruits. The flavor isn’t as hoppy as I thought. The strong malts, sweet caramel, sweet dough and crackers are first and foremost, with the oranges and slight pine at the end. Finish is sweet and slightly chewy. I wonder how this will age, we’ll find out.

Bomber. Pours a ruby brown with a bif head of tan foam. Aromas are a pretty nice mix of sugary malts and a little bit of hops bite... both floral and pine. Flavor is a nice mix of brown sugar, caramel, fruit and pineapple. Alcohol makes itself felt, but doesn’t mess up the flavor. I really like this beer. It isn’t over the top aggressive like so many of the BW’s that seem to get all the press. This is just darn fine.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark red-brown color with a very large orange-tan head. The aroma was very strong piney and grapefruity hops with a fruit cocktail element throughout. The flavor was wonderfully rich and strong with notes of pine, fruit cocktail, pink grapefruit, sugar, cocoa and lightly roasty malts. The finish was long with resiny hops. The mouthfeel was thick and full. Wonderful.

Bomber - pours a cloudy dark red, with a soapy head - this is a tasty british style barleywine with an american twist - the aroma has some american hoppiness to it, with some raisin and fig in the mix, peppery alcohol - low carbonation, with a creamy mouthfeel - the flavor starts with some earthy hops, but the complex fruity notes (plum, date, fig, raisin) and toffee-ish sweetness you’d expect from the british style come forward - ends with some alcohol and some drier notes of sherry and even a little bit of peat - this is a very solid barleywine - I must buy more.
