It’s back! Our mythical Flying Mouflan is a resiny, caramel, chocolately giant of a barleywine ale. This strong and alluring beer originally took flight as Scratch #4 way back when, and we’ve since taken to aging it in bourbon barrels. This version, however, isn’t aged on wood. It’s the OG Flying Mouflan you know and love, and it’s only available on draft at the brewery for a limited time!

Bottle shared by sarro. Poured a deep amber with a near white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was sweet with grains and caramel and just a slight bitter backing from the hops. Flavor was similar with the sweet grains and caramel dominating the finish but combining nicely with a growing pine hop note.

A dark reddish copper barley wine with a thick moka head. In aroma, nice pungeant and vinous old malt with light vanilla and oaken notes. In mouth, a smooth sweet burned malt with good British hops, treacle, oily and onctuous loads of bitterness, rich and complex. On tap at MacGregors, July 31 2010.

Bottled. A murky amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and over ripe fruits, leading to a dry and bitter finish.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 7/12/10

Aroma: The nose has some has some sweet malts, brown sugar, ripe fruit, caramel, and some booze
Appearance: Pours a dark reddish-mahogany color with a lasting beige head that leaves scattered lace
Flavor: Leans malty, it is relatively sweet, lots of brown sugar, some earthy hop presence for balance
Palate: Has a fairly full bodied feel to it, smooth, slightly oily, and with just a little bit of heat in the finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty solid beer. It has a pretty big feel to it, lots of flavor, good sweetness that is balanced more by the booze then the hops, but they are there as well. I like this one, a very solid beer for sure.

Woody with very subtle brown sugar and pine notes. Cloudy brown, thin yellow head, good lacing. Full bodied. Sweet dates and syrup on the front end. Transitions to bitter walnut. Good balance. Brown aleish, but sweeter and stronger. Easy drinking for the style.

Super hazy deep amber copper coloured body with a very dense and frothy light brown head - very nice beer - perfect for the style. Potent aroma of hops, alcohol, pit fruits, apricots, caramel, toasted malt and way more hops - very nice indeed! Full-bodied; Deep roasty flavours with a lot of pit fruit tastes and a touching of malt near the backend. Aftertaste shows a lot of hops and bitterness, some nuts and a bunch more sweetness - very complex and rather light showing the alcohol than a typical barleywine. Finishes cleaner and more imperial ipa-ish than a traditional barleywine, makes this a better drink for the summertime. My only major beef with this is that any big beer should only be in 33 cL bottles - no more big bottles for big beers -please. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Clarendon (Arlington), Virginia earlier today on 23-April-2010, sampled at home in Washington.
