Bottle. Copper colour with a longlasting off-white head. Malty fruity aroma, hints of dark fruits. Malty caramel, coffee flavor. Long malty aftertaste.

[Cask at GBBF] Amber colour. Heavily resiny. Sweetish and medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Astringent very resiny bitter finish. Unrefined, but certainly sticks out.

Bottled. Clear, sparkling, deep golden beer with a small off-white head. Sweet and malty aroma with some alcohol notes. Too weak I think. The flavor starts off with alcohol, but soon replaced by a sweet maltyness, caramel and hops. Medium to full body, with a very high carbonation level and sweetness. Quite sugary, malty finish. Maybe the carbonation level is to blaim, or maybe my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed. (060712)

Bottle 08-04-06. A warm golden colour, pleasantly hoppy and bitter. An excellent beer really enjoyed as had not had it for some time. A7 A4 T8 P3 Ov16 3.8 Had this again Bottle picked up at Waitrose, Wallingford, Oxon 15.11.11 consumed the same day Pours amber with large foamy sticky white head, really sticking to the glass on the way down. The carbonation is quite busy initially but settles down after a while. Flinty nose, wet pebbles, touch tinny, with some dusty hops. Quite soft in mouth, a little orange but there is a huge lengthy bittersweet rush, finish is a little dry, toffee and malts show more as this warms, good beer. A7 A5 T7 P4 Ov14 3.7

Very old bottle - meaning the original, real thing... Foxy-chestnut beer, clear (!); small, just off-white head, very dense. Quite nutty, walnut oil, but not much else. Beautifully aged, delicate brandy taste, with winelike madeirisation; a woody, oak-like finish. Very well bodied, oily MF. More nutty, not over-oxydised aftertaste. Nice, malty, chewy beer, just a little too light to my taste - but the real thing. And than now, the cask version, as per Mark Dorber Amberish-orange beer with a better than usual B.C."H.". 4/5 Cookie malts, very fresh hops, but dosed, hint at caramel, whiff of ureum. 7/10 Very "beery" ale: combination of malts, caramel- and cookie- , fresh noble UK-hops, bit citrussy, and most important, in top-shape, complex. Grapey retronasal ending quite dry. 8/10 Light to medium bodied, slight slickness, sticky aftermath 4/5 Exceptionally good-tasting White Shield, better than I’ve ever had it. 15/20

Bottle conditioned
Cloudy amber color; compact head, lively bottle. Basic but quite nice hoppy aroma. Some malt, pretty strong hopping, strong flavor, some resins. Good example.

Cask gravity at Notts BF 05. Slightly hazy but I had been waiting 3 days to get my hands on this, so I didn’t mind that it wasn’t quite ready yet. Hazy orange colour, no head. Good hoppy, fruity nose. Good citrus fruits and some sweet strawberry which carry on to a zesty finish. Very little sediment in the bottle if any. Aroma is some yeast, some minerality and some hops. Some dusty earthiness. It’s surprisingly hoppy. You know what I still like this. It’s a grower. It’s a tasty hoppy beer. Mmmm, yes I really am liking this and the earthyness of the hops. Some toffee malts develop. Touch too carbonated. 7 48316 3.8/5.0

[Bottle conditioned] A hazy amber beer with a small off-white head. The aroma contains quite a bit of alchol, but also some hops. The flavor is powerful with strong notes of alcohol, caramel, and bitter hops. The end is quite bitter.

Bottle Orangepeel, wood and christmas spice aroma. Dark amber, low carbonation, fairly large stable head. Flavor does not match the exiting aroma: Oranges and dry wooden notes still there but to a lesser degree. Spices and slightly dusty english hops are appareant as well. Fairly light body and a slight fizzyness. English hop and wood aftertaste
