Blitzen is a Festivus Ale with a deep, dark amber hue and a warming rye aroma. Full-bodied and rich with a complex malt flavor, savory spiciness and a touch of rye in the finish.

The celebrated Northern Michigan Wood Elf, Blitzen, only appears during the winter holidays to warm the palate and the soul – and to awaken memories of holidays past. Born out of Northern lore, Blitzen goes door to door, surrounded by fluttering snowflakes, and offers his services as mediator during the “Feats of Strength” for a small sum of sugar. The Northern Wood Elf only appears on the 23rd of December – he wanders out of the towering pines by following the North Star to get his little elven hands on delicious mountains of sugar.

Love the bottle. love the heavy caramel/bready notes. Only issues are that its a bit heavy/sweet. Maybe it’s a good northern Michigan winter seasonal, but its pretty heavy as dubbels go.

Bottle. Earthy toffee malt and grass aroma. Hazy amber with moderate head. Sweet toffee malt and moderately bitter herbal lemon peel flavor. Nice body. Thankfully not a typical over-spiced mess.

Bottle: slightly hazy copper-amber with a large beige head. Spiced caramel, rye aroma. Rye malt, caramel malt, berry taste. A bit of woody bittering. It’s ok, but odd for the style.

Pour is a clear brown with a large tan head. Aroma has some oily hops, caramel malt and a slight spice. Flavor is a bit of ripe red berries with a bit of toffe and caramel malts. Finish leaves a tart herbal note. This beer is has a super heavy mouthfeel but the malts impart a fruity holiday cake flavor. Decent winter warmer.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/7/2013. Pours lightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, raisin, toast, rye, brown bread, light chocolate, light roast, light pepper, herbal, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt and light hop notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toast, rye, brown bread, raisin, light chocolate, roast, pepper, herbal, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, rye, toast, brown bread, raisin, light roast, pepper, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of dark/roast malt and moderate hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice winter ale. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

On tap at Jolly Pumpkin A2. Pours a near clear amber brown with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of dark bread and grains with light spice, a bit of sweetness and rye. Flavor starts with sweet grains and bread with a growing Xmas spice note.

Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Hazy, orange-red-brown body, thin to medium clumping beige head. Woody, tannic nose with fruitskin and soapy hops. Lots of tannic bitter and fruity, woody notes in the body, bitter, herbal, and slightly tart. Gets muddy after a few sips.
