One of Michael Jackson’s 500 Classic Brews. Carnegie Porter was brewed for the first time in 1836 and tastes the same today as it did then. Carnegie Porter has a creamy head with a scent of coffee. Its sweet and well rounded flavor is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. Storage helps the flavor mature and enhances its harmony.

Bottle from Oak Tree. Argang 2004!!!!! Pours very brown/black with a 3 finger foamy tan head. Aroma of fresh dark fruits. Like fresh fig even. Full bodied with near creamy carbonation. It’s very full of freshish dark fruit flavor. Rounding off with treacle. Not bitter, but not all that sweet. This must be balanced. Good drink. Ages well too.

Bottled @ Oliver Twist. Dark color, short brown head. Aroma of sweet sugary coffee, molasses. Decent coffee taste, rye, bit too sweet though. Got some smoked meat and bacon aroma as well.

2004 Vintage 16.9 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Rated 4/25/10. Pours a pretty much opaque black color with a large brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of big chocolate and caramel notes with some oxidation notes. The taste is milk chocolate, toasted notes from the oxidation I assume and a bit of sweet caramel notes. Lightly bitter finish. Medium bodied. Good beer... this has aged nicely.

Bottle. Black beer with a light head. The aroma is sweet and roasted, and the flavour is very coffee bitter with a hint of malt and roastedness. Overall a nice fairly rich and bitter porter.

Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 7/9/2009 Pittsburgh RB tasting extravaganza (PGHRBEXT) at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I see a spread of bottles like I did there. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we served! For example, how about this beer; 2004 vintage Carnegie Stark porter. Dark porter appearance, but not cloudy. Barely any carbonation. Roasty aroma. Aroma carries over to the flavors. Taste is ropey at times and there appears to be some oxidation. Perhaps not as good as many more sparkling porters. Overall a rather laid back personality. Certainly not like most American made porters.
