At the base of Malt Whisky Trail is a 90/- ale – or ‘wee heavy’ – a traditional style of medium-bodied Scottish amber ale that Innis & Gunn found robust enough to handle the more assertive malts, without overwhelming the subtler flavour notes. Innis & Gunn matured the beer in casks sourced from five distilleries in the Lowlands, Highlands, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown for 30 days before blending it to produce a rich, balanced Scottish ale with layers of complex and delicate flavour.

Nice creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is sweet grainy, butterscotch, minerals, almond essence, oak, wet grain, sugar, grass, vanilla, caramel malts. Taste is slightly sweet grainy, butterscotch, wet grain, caramel malts, grass, almond essence, minerals, hay, vanilla, sugar. Little bitterness, slightly metallic mouthfeel. Boring.

Poured from 330mL bottle. Copper brown with off-white head. Typical I&G aroma with vanilla, oak, and toffee plus a hint of petey scotch. Same flavour with the scotch flavour coming through a lot more on the taste than in the smell. My favourite I&G beer thus far.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - deep chestnut with lovely red chinks. If the head hadn’t disappeared so quickly it would’ve been a perfect 5. Nose - treacle cake going into molasses. Taste - like barrabrith bread. Fruit sugar and a touch of spice. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy and fairly sweet texture and a finish that is a bit too sweet but kinda works. Overall - a bit sweet but it works ok. Overall -

330ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours clear copper, short-lived off-white head. Aromas of butter and biscuit, toffee and vanilla. Taste is sweet as. Thin body, sticky finish. Not sure why I bothered to be honest.

Bottle from SB cons 2014-07-16 Göteborg AR: caramel and brush cleaning liquid AP: reddish amber clear, fizzy beige deminishing head F: fizzy, caramel fudge, raw bourbon whiskie, some sweetnees, rasins, wee bit hollow but much more lasting the other in the same family - and after some time dried pear in dark chocolate

Deep clear reddish brown with a huge brownish head, loads of lacings. Aroma is malty, with oak, overriped pear, dried fruit, fudge, caramel and some soap. Taste is about the same, dried fruit, oak, vanilla, toffee, caramel. Fairly big maltiness, a distinct oak tone. Finishes smooth, long, vanilla bitterish. Medium body, medium carbo, creamy texture. I can’t really sense any whisky trails in this. The oak tones perhaps, but they’re not whisky specific to me. Still, the best I’ve had from this brewery.
