Usher’s Ocean IPA:

The Reaper, a very pretty "Fifie", is a traditional Scottish fishing boat. A few years ago it was the home to three casks of custom brewed India Pale Ale as part of a unique experiment.

The 30 Days of IPA project sent several casks of IPA to sea for several weeks to test the old stories about it maturing on the voyage to India. The results were remarkable, with the beer developing some complex new flavours due to being rocked about on the sea for a few weeks.

Now we’re bringing the idea back...

Introducing Usher’s Ocean IPA

Graeme has produced a new IPA specifically designed to cope with the rigours of spending weeks on board a boat, we’ve had some special wooden casks made (the surface of the wood seems to play an important role) and we’re setting sail.

When the casks return we’ll let them settle, tap them, and put them on sail sale to Mug Club members only for the first days, and on "general release" from then on.

The first batch is due to return on the 17th of April - approximate date subject to storms, becalming, selkies, krakens, etc.

Cask at Andrew Usher’s. Pours clear pale gold with a thin bubbly white head. Aromas of light lemon, wood. Taste is sour, lemon, light acetone. Sour finish. Not great (overheard in the bar being sold as "delicious"). Actually pretty grim.
