Bottle conditioned.
Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style but alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

Bottle at home, split with JFK, 03/04/15. Lightly hazed amber with a decent beige covering that retains well. Nose is rich dark fruits, spice, orange peel, fruit cake mix, caramel fudge, vanilla. Taste comprises candied fruit peel, caramel, Xmas cake, dates, orange marmalade, light booze. Full bodied, oily, booze fumes in a drying close. Solid stuff.

Draft at 2014 Yokohama Beer Fest. Bourbon-ish orange color with a thin, off-white head. Dried fruit, currant, fig with hints of toffee, caramel and praline all on the nose. Tastes more of the same with cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and ginger coming out as it warms up to room temperature. Slightly sweet on the palate at first, then the spices kick in and some bitterness creeps up on the finish. Still a smooth finish however. Solid barley wine.

Bottle was a gusher on first opening--lost a good third to my kitchen counter. What was left poured a dark, reddish-brown, with big, thick, dirty white head. Aroma of licorice, booze, dark fruit. Flavor had the licorice/anise from the aroma, along with: booze, raisin, bread, malt, some hops, and more booze. This is a pretty good example of a barley wine, which isn’t one of my favorite styles (but checking off the Ale Smith offerings).

Appearance is amber/ orangey, fairly opaque, a one finger beige bubbly head, leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is malty, boozy, hint of chocolate malt, orange peel, fruity, biscuity, caramel, toffee, Christmas pudding hints, smells big. Taste- bitter fruits, orange peel, some raisin, hop resins, cinnamon and ’winter spice’, peppery, caramel, some honey, lengthy finish with plenty of booze at the end, but the alcohol is quite understated for 11%. Nicely carbonated, a bit oily in the mouth. An earthy nutiness emerges as it warms. Excellent stuff.
