Tushkar has a smooth and sweet mouthfeel from the finest Scottish oats, chocolate and coffee top notes from the chocolate malt, mild bitterness from the Mittlefruh hops and a balancing roundness from the respectable 5.5% ABV. The depth and complexity of flavour are delivered without heaviness, so they complement a relatively low carbonation level. Named after Shetland’s traditional peat-cutting tool, Tushkar will bring you the warmth of a good peat fire on a winter’s day.

13/2/2021. Bottle sample courtesy of SHIG, cheers. Pours very dark brown with a small creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, nut, dried fruits, light coffee. Moderate sweetness and medium roasted bitterness with a slight sour edge. Moderate body, average carbonation. Roasty finish.

330ml bottle from Aldi (in Berwick) - Flat dark brown body, not much on top. Muted nose, picked out burnt grain, toasted wholemeal seeded bread, a bit of coffee. Taste a bit watery, ashy on the finish. Disappointing really.

Bottle thanks to the brewery. Appearance - opaque black with a nice fawn head. Nose - acetone and pear drops. Later a little chocolate. Taste - roast notes, chocolate and coffee. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - the nose was confusing but it improved from there.

330ml bottle as a precursor to the Siren Rainbow tasting, Jan 15, courtesy of Jeremy. My first from the Shetland Islands and it presents strange fizzy off-flavours from the start. Lactose, raisins, marzipan, chocolate, peat. Not the greatest of combinations, and not one I’d like to have again.

330ml bottle: BBD 31 Sep 15. drank during Jan 15. Dark ruby hue to the almost black body, the head a tanned crown. Malty molasses give the beer a sweetness with mild coffee and chocolate notes in both the nose and flavour. Cola fizzy to the palate and lacking in any oatmeal like presence it let itself down a little, but I quite enjoyed it , even with it’s flaws.

Bottle from Bacco Wine. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. Light lacing. Aroma of port, soy sauce and Marmite. Flavour of tangy berries, stewed tea, a hint of dark chocolate and a metallic finish. Thin body with a watery texture. Soft fizz. A pretty tasty Stout, though there’s little evidence of the oatmeal in the mouthfeel.

Keg at Bottle Cap, Aberdeen. It pours darkest brown/nr black with a small tan head. The nose is soft, sweet, light toast, blueberry, jammy, treacle and burnt brown sugar and fruit cake. The taste is bitter-sweet, roast, earthy, acidity, dark fruits, eccles cake, berry, light toast and jammy berry with a dryish finish. Light-medium body and fine carbonation. I hoped for a bit more body with the oats. Easy-going, but a bit disappointing.... OK.
