Idjit is a potent imperial stout, black as the night and dark as sin. Loaded with roasted malts and the perfect amount of bittering hops, it is as smooth as it is powerful. A beer you can count on, any time, any where.
This beer started out as an experiment. Mikael likes to tell the story like this: One of our brewers wanted to see how strong a beer we could brew (at our old brewery in Mölndal). The result was a 16% imperial stout which according to Mikael was super gross; Too much of everything, unbalanced. An idiot beer if you will. However, after a few tries of scaling the recipe down and tweaking it a bit, getting the malt bill just right, we had made our idiot into our Idjit. And as we all know, Idjits rule!

500ml bottle picked up at Grassroots
Pours dark brown with a small brown head and some lacing. Aroma roasted malts, roast coffee, dark milk chocolate and woody. Flavors roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, woody with a dry finish
Nice. I didn’t care for it at first but it’s growing on me.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Roasty dark malty aroma, slightly earthy, nutty, hints of cocoa, dried treacle, plum, raisin; while warming up even more spicy and herbal, some lovage, creamy balsamico. Taste is dry dark malty, roasty, minimally metallic, a touch of plum, raisin, some treacle and cocoa; almost no malt sweetness left. Rich and complex, as wanted; dryness, the lack of heavy sweetness makes Idjit! dangerously drinkable. Matches a category named ’Classic British’ in my memory, reminds me of my primal Courage Imperial Russian Stout experience that dates back almost 20 years, reproducing images of those precious, small-sized 170ml bottles and the imaginary feeling of getting in touch with history. Extra point for triggering.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, licorice, brown sugar and alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long warm, smooth, chocolate, licorice and coffee finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle. It pours a dark, dark brown body under a small, dense, dark beige head. The aroma is very coffee-ish, with caramel sauce, roasted, almost burnt malts, dark chocolate and some soy sauce hints. It’s full-bodied, soft and slightly alcoholic on the palate. Even though it’s full-bodied it slides down very easily. Lots of coffee and coffee grit flavor, roasted kind of bitterness and some hoppy notes too. Bonfire hints and dark chocolate. Lasting bitter, roasted and coffee-ish finish with dark bitter chocolate coming towards the very end. Tasteful and pleasant this one, not very warming considering the ABV, and it’s almost dangerously drinkable. Well worth a revisit if I bump into it again. A Swedish classic indeed. 140619

(Bottle) Very dark, essentially black, with thin tawny head. Disconcertingly, as I poured carefully to avoid any sediment gelatinous lumps appeared in the last centimeter or so and what remained in the bottle bordered on glutinous. Assertive and pleasant aroma with notes if black coffee and slightly burnt toast. Full body with gentle but sufficient carbonation. Rich and dark taste with flavours of very dark chocolate, coffee, dark roast malt with pleasant hints of raisins and a slight dark toffee sweetness. It’s a good beer but not a great beer - a little harsh, and I was rather off put by how it poured (and I have not reached the bottom of the glass yet - I may end up revising the palate rating if there are nasty things waiting for me there!)

Nydelig duft av kaffe, lakris, bek og vanilje. Dyp mørk brun farge, nesten sort. Lite skum, ring langs kant. Smak av bek, kaffe, lakris og en anelse vanilje.

Keg at CBC Covvy Gee, 12/05/14 - not opening night! Light black with a moderate tan swrl and edgework. Nose is big old roast malt, earthy cocoa, grain, toffee, bitter notes, light coffee grinds. Taste comprises bitter roast which is balanced well with sweet toffee fudge, dark chocolate, lightly singed caramel. Medium bodied, fine carbonatio, sweet subtle roasterana in the closure. Decent well balanced impy, not overly complex, but an easy drinking affair. The ABV is well integrated.

Bottle from De Hopduvel. Dark brown colour, beige foam, disappears quickly. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and sweet caramel. Light bitter finish. Good IRS.

Bottle. Gloopy pour. Are there going to be snot-like chunks at the bottom of the glass? - unhappily yes, maybe kept too cold too long. Black with a small tan head that never quite disappears. Aroma of (good) dark chocolate, vanilla, some berries, other spices. Silky, low carbonation. Very sweet with chocolate, some molasses and coffee. Roasted flavours creep up through the sweetness into firm bitterness with some hard spices (anise) and a little warmth at the end.
