"Double" (imperial) wheat stout.

This imperial really strikes back. From a strange country far, far away, comes the only Imperial Wheat Stout in the known universe. Once again, the ’Hand’ brewery - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale - boldly goes where no brewery has gone before.

13/05/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Nera, imenetrabile, con schiuma abbondante color cappuccino, abbastanza persistente. Aroma intenso di frumento, caffè, qualche leggero off flavour metallico. In bocca è caffettosa, amarognola, con punte di frumento e note lievemente metalliche. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Interessante, anche se non è il mio genere di birra. Non credo fosse al meglio della forma.

From a 500ml bottle on 26/12/2011 (batch 353, brewed on 6/4/2011, best before 6/4/2014, 9% ABV). Pours black with a medium brown head which disappears quickly. Has a pleasant but only moderate aroma of coffee, chocolate and dark fruit. The flavour begins with big dollops of sweet milk chocolate, followed by a distinct and quite sharp burnt/roasted malt flavour, along with some warming alcohol. I can’t detect any wheat in this at all. It’s nicely carbonated and has a creamy texture. A very enjoyable, big, sweet stout, though perhaps not quite as distinctive as I thought it would be.

500ml bottle @ Gloria, Kuopio

Batch 271, brygget 19.02.2010. Pours pitch black with a massive foamy and caramelly beige colored head. Aroma has notes of fruits, grass, apricose, roasted malts and coffee. Taste is quite fruity and wheaty until a massive roastiness kicks in. Notes of fruits, smoke, espresso coffee, chocolate and toffee. Sweet and smooth, but also slightly roasty and bitter finish. Full bodied, perhaps a bit too carbonated. Nice, surprisingly well balanced imperial wheat stout.

Bottle from Batch 287. Bottle Date: 6-24-2010. Purchased at Julio’s liquor’s about 8 months ago. Don’t remember what I paid for it. Used a snifter. Served at cellar temperature. Thick, fluffy, beige head with good head retention. Well, carbonated. Nose is sweet wheat with hints of sugar and roasted malt. Flavor is a complex blend, lots going on here. Flavor is moderately bitter roast, some light smoke, baker’s chocolate. Hints of licorice. Nice creaminess in the mouthfeel, makes you want to drink more. Don’t pick up the 9 % ABV at all. Goes down easy, great drinkability. Excellent Impy stout. This is top tier, real nice.

Imperial Wheat Stout sounds interesting indeed. There’s just something about imperial stout that doesn’t fit my taste.. Seems they always end up being less than expected.

Bottle at shared at Håndverkerstuene. Pours black with tan head. Chocolate and fruit in the aroma with coffee, wheat and toffee in the flavor. Way too much carbonation spoils the beer (Rated offline 2011/04/15)

Komplexes, sehr aromatisches Bier – Spitze! 11/13/12/14/12/14
