Almost black with a small dark brown head. Aroma is very sweet malty, roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and bourbon. Flavor is very sweet and very bitter. Sweet and rather bitter finish with warming alcohol. 251011

375cl 2009 Vintage bottle @ Euston Tap, London, shared with MesandSim. Pitch black, opaque color, small beige head. Smell rum, roastyness, coffee, lightly burned, slightly smokey notes and some dark chocolate. Taste wood, alcohol, dark chocolate, roastyness and slightly coffee. Very round taste, perfect balance. Oily texture, alcohol soft but present. Medium carbonation, medium to full body; suits the beer perfectly. Absolutely love this!

Sample at SBWF 2011. Bottle. Clear, dark brown liquid with very small, lightly tan head. Aroma of booze, toffee, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, oak and coconut. Taste is medium sweet and lightly bitter with notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Very smooth and balanced. Full bodied with low carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. Nice brew, very balanced taste but a bit boozy aroma.

I probably shouldn’t rate this since I haven’t had the old viscosity yet, but funk dat. The aroma is very boozy, coconut rum and bourbon mostly, but there is also a bit of caramel. I guess there was a little something extra in those barrels (apologizes to Lagunitas) Black, medium fizzy brown head with absolutely no retention, no adherence to the glass. Full body and boozy, but neither thick nor viscous as the name implies. Licorice and date flavor, some chocolate notes. Bourbon appears at midpalate and hangs around for a very long time. I bet the base beer was great before the barrel aging ruined it,, my opinion only. Well crafted for the booze hounds.

Draught at Beer Revolution. Black; flat. Aroma of oak, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, berries, cafe au lait. Flavor is cola, vanilla, whiskey, chocolate. Rich and flavorful, and very sweet. Rather clean, fruity, tangy finish. Old Visc. is better. Flavor is too dominated by the bourbon.

Bottle at Brewdog Bar. Pours opaque black with no head. The nose has oaky tannins, liquorice and tar. The taste has more of the same, though the tannins are not so obvious. There is a big structure and a thick texture with a cloying finish, annoyingly. Overall, interesting beer but unbalanced!

375 ml bottle @ Cardinal. Black body with a nice, thin, lasting beige head. Really strong and nice aroma of black malt, moderate roast, smooth, but distinct bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, roasted coffee and hint of peat. Flavor is pretty much what the aroma promises, balanced bitter, smooth oak and warming alcohol. Really fantastic flavor, it’s so strong and still delicious smooth and balanced. Fine full body with a long lasting aftertaste with hops, malt, wood and pleasant alcohol. Fantastic – a beer with a clear WOW factor.

Rating #700, and beer #2 for my second anniversary on Ratebeer. 12.7 oz corked and caged bottle into snifter. Funny label depicting a guy under an old truck, emptying used motor oil into pint glasses. And that’s what this looks like, completely impervious motor-oil black. Has no head but leaves a ring of dark tan foam. Smells like a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. The oak and bourbon are quite pungent; also chocolate milk and some overripe fruit. This is without a doubt the most thick and syrupy beer I’ve ever had. Holy freaking firkins, Batman. Taste is mostly sweet with a sour backbone. Tastes like a really rich, alcoholic and decadent liquid dessert. It’s like drinking alcohol-laced Hershey’s syrup straight from the can, only that sounds pretty nasty. This is delicious. Has a lingering aftertaste of licorice. Carbonation is very low, but that’s okay. I’m kind of hungover right now and didn’t think this would go down too well today. I was wrong.
