A unique brew reminiscent of an English bitter, with a light amber color and lots of hop character. It is made from the second runnings of our Old Foghorn mash. Anchor Small revives the ancient brewing tradition of creating two distinct craft beers from one mash. We sprinkle warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first “wort” has run off, creating a second, lighter brew. Technically, both beers are "ales" because they are made with top-fermenting yeast. The result is an easy-drinking “session” beer.

ummm, this was an interesting surprise but overall not the best beer ive ever had, a little funk in the end that was unappetizing. couldnt get the feeling that I was drinking the "backwash" of a real beer.

Pour is a bright gold with a large white head. Aroma has some burnt malts with a little sourness in there. Flavor is almost nothing. A little bitterness but that’s about it. I understand what they were trying to do here but it just dosen’t work..

1 pint 6 ounce bottle. For what this beer is this is pretty darn good - certainly not the best one I’ve ever had, but for seconds? This is a pretty cool beer. Like recycling. Cool.

Bottle. Poured clear honey yellow with thick lasting head. Pleasant but faint aroma, a little hoppy. A little malt, a little hop in the flavour, not bad, but too slim bodied to be a good bitter, Some unpleasant wateriness in the finish. This is low enough in alcohol to be a session beer, and is usually not expensive.

Bottle from Once Upon a Vine, Richmond, VA, opened 9/23/10. Pours a clear amber color with a large foamy offwhite head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, apple, nutty notes, floral hops. The taste is biscuity malts and strong bitter hops as well as a bit of green apple. Medium bodied. Somewhat disappointing.

Bottle as shown. Pours a clear orange yellow with a small creamy white head that leaves good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is sweet malt with honey. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet hop flavor and nice bitter finish. A good bitter from Anchor.

I want to thank sloth for the chance to taste this beer. Out of a whim, it just appeared on my porch the other day. Big bowling pin bottle. Nice rocky head that does not fade. Smells a little like coors light with a tad of cardboard in there. In the glass there is also this background olfactory of some cow manure too. Mildly hoppy taste bud sensations. Friendly yet you know it has some rude ale personality in there. Very little if any cardboard carries over to the taste. Bitter and laid back but not dull hop flavors. Decent amount of fizz. Overall good lite beer experience because it does not really come across like a lite beer. I know the alky content listed here is just 3% but I thought it was much closer to 5% or more. At times that manure aroma is a little ddifficult to overcome during the session.

Amber pour in the glass. Very carbonated pale. Smooth to drink. Not terrific, but okay. Rated 2/20/04
