A unique brew reminiscent of an English bitter, with a light amber color and lots of hop character. It is made from the second runnings of our Old Foghorn mash. Anchor Small revives the ancient brewing tradition of creating two distinct craft beers from one mash. We sprinkle warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first “wort” has run off, creating a second, lighter brew. Technically, both beers are "ales" because they are made with top-fermenting yeast. The result is an easy-drinking “session” beer.

Bottle. Weak, hoppy aroma. Copper colour, small white head. Bitter start which stays for a long time. Very good for a beer of this ABV.

Bottle. Slightly reddish-amber with a nice off-white head. Slightly citrusy aroma. Thin body. Mineral flavors that linger. Some graininess and tannins.

(Bottle 65 cl) "Small Beer" has the same brewing history as what we used to call "thin beer" in Denmark a hundred years ago: giving the remaining mash from top-product Old Foghorn a second go. Amber coloured with a slight haze, a very small head is left on top of the beer. Very bitter, not much sweetness to detect here. And naturally not much body either. But quite fresh and quenching.

This is certainly an interesting concoction. Pours a clear dark orange color with a medium thin eggshell-white head. Thin lacing. The aroma is light toasted malt. Light-bodied and bitter, without much flavor. A bit of earthy malt is there but the general bitterness is all the beer really has. The finish is lightly bitter and lingering. All in all, a nice throwback beer but not one I would go out of my way to have again.

First time encountering this beer, but the experience was less than satisfying. Has a clear straw-colored body topped by a thin off-white head and a bitter hops aroma. The flavor is a very mediocre bitter, dry, cerealy affair with just a hint of sweetness. Very much like many macro-lagers. I can best describe the flavor as a "used and abused" dirtiness. Grassy. Not terrible but it does have fine company in the Budweisers and Millers that occupied nearby shelf space.

The aroma is sour with notes of malt and mash. The color is orange and it has a fine head. The flavor is very malty in the beginning and has a rather bitter end. The body is thin. All the good stuff from the mash has already been extracted and is to be found in one of my favorite beers: Old Foghorn - so I'll stay away from this one and stick to Old Foghorn.

I applaud the style. I applaud the wonderful lacing that speaks volumes for the quality brewing. But I can't, even out of sympathy, award this beer points for flavor. It just dosnet have much and what it has isnt good. Buttery, soapy, horribly boring. Drainpour.

Strong golden colour with a dense white head and a bunch of large bubbles rising from the bottom (looks like artificial carbonation). Aroma of skunky malt, stale hops and a prolonged caster sugar sweetness. Light-bodied; Offensive foul-feet tasting beer with a gross malt quality and an even worse hoppiness. Bitter presence consisting of bad sour/funky tastes. Nothing in this one is pleasing, and its freshness makes me wonder even more just how bad this beer can get. I wanted to sample this because I can regularly find it...but I'm sorry I did...this is definately not worth the money! Aftertaste is very offensive and doesn't please the palate at all. Overall, I'd stick with seven ounces of Old Foghorn over 22 ounces of this one...ANY DAY! I bought this 22 ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 11-December-2003. This beer was bottled on: 7-October-2003.
