A unique brew reminiscent of an English bitter, with a light amber color and lots of hop character. It is made from the second runnings of our Old Foghorn mash. Anchor Small revives the ancient brewing tradition of creating two distinct craft beers from one mash. We sprinkle warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first “wort” has run off, creating a second, lighter brew. Technically, both beers are "ales" because they are made with top-fermenting yeast. The result is an easy-drinking “session” beer.

Draft @ Anchor Brewing Company. Pours a golden color with a small white head. Has a malty bready caramel aroma. Sweetish weak malty grainy flavor. Has a sweetish malty finish with some hoppy bitter aftertaste.

Bottled (thanks whoever sent this is a trade, found in my cellar). Pale ambery golden colour with small off-white head. Aroma is wood and quite harsh skunky earthyness. Flavour is earthy, grassy, a bit wooden and also has some slight fruity notes lurking in the background. A bit harsh as for the earthyness, but otherwise quite nice.

Light caramel malt aroma with some noble or floral hop nose. Amber gold color with a white head that wasn’t trying too hard. Near medium body with mild, creamy carbonation. The flavor is something of light caramel with a very impressive bitterness. The finish is pretty much the same, and the bitter persists nicely into the finish. Not exactly crisp, but very, very nice. This is a session beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours a light amber color with a thick frothy head. Pouring also kicks up a nice noble hop smell, followed by some light amber malts. Taste is pretty nice. Low malt levels, as expected, toasty with a bit of a dry finish. Hops are a bit sharp and spicy, close to a German lager profile with an English subtext. Nice to find a "light" beer that realizes that more hops don’t add calories or alcohol. A fine session beer.

Rated November 2006. Bottle pours with a dark golden colored body that supports a nice off white head of foam. The aroma is very light. Almost no smell. Flavor is like a watered down Anchor Steam. It has light malts and a full hop flavor.

22oz bottle - Pours light copper with a one finger head. It has very little aroma, maybe just a little graininess. The flavor is mild hop and malt in a too thin body. The finish is lightly bitter. This one is definitely too watery.

Bottle. Syrupy barley malt aroma. Medium amber with small head. Slightly sweet barley malt with moderate hops finish. Very watery. I now understand what Shakepeare’s Henry VI was talking about.

Nose of caramel malt; light copper with no head; flavor showed malty caramel with some tartness; nothing like the Foghorn from which it starts!

Deep gold, small beige head. Nicely balanced hop/malt nose.No malt in the palate, thin, with nothing but a medium hop taste. No malt, no balance. Not one I would look for.

Pours amber into a shaker. Off-white medium sized head with good retention. Fraternity basement notes. Filtered mung water; but not entirely unpleasant. Better than non-alcoholic...
